Enjoy your Sunday @lynnelow one month for me tomorrow too!

  • Hi Team. I saw the doctor today and we had a look back at my blood tests since 2014. Safe to say my liver is not in great shape. However the last one had shown slight improvement so the 80 days sober I had earlier this year must have given some relief. Next step is another blood test in a month and an ultra sound to take an in depth look. This was the doctors idea and not mine, solely based off blood test results. So what now? Well, I’m not short on motivation for never picking up a drink again that’s for sure, but today has given me a pretty sharp realty check to boot. Drinking everyday for years on end of course I knew the damage I was doing to my body and it worried me a lot. But rather than deal with any of it, I would of course just check via the stuff causing the problem to start with. But no more my friends, no more. I will stay sober and in a month feel proud to say my tests see me heading in the right direction and that my body is healing itself and that means everything.

    • “No more my friends, no more.” I like that. Feel like I should write it on a post it note.

    • Well done on keeping up with your doctor’s appointments! It is scary as hell and I do mean it when I say give yourself credit for going. My doctor told me that a big issue in the medical world is “non-adherence”. I had to look that up after my appointment, lol. Non-native speaker of English here. So basically people not following up with suggested medical care, patients not taking meds, etc.
You faced that fear and saw your doctor, and now you have a “next best step” with that blood test and the ultrasound. Hang in there and get those tests done. It will feel good to have the results, either way. If we give our liver that break, the organ recovers really well most of the time. Lots of love your way and keep us in the loop if you would like to once you know more.
      oxoxoxo

    • Glad you were able to catch damage and quit drinking. glad to see you back here, @phoenix0407. day by day.

    • Yes @phoenix0407, it’s pretty scary what we do to our physical well-being with drinking! Health is everything, for sure! Good for you for heading in the right direction as far as healing is concerned. xo

    • Wonderful, talking to your doc. My blood work is stellar since quitting. I did find out I have severe osteoporosis, so that is something to check as well. I should have been downing milk instead of alcohol a long time ago.

    • You’re not alone and you have my empathy, it’s hard to accept what we do to ourselves but we do and it’s human.
Well done on facing up to those Dr’s appointments. Your body is precious and worth supporting.

  • Just about to hit the hay, end of Day 20 so 3 weeks tomorrow. I’m feeling really good, like a different person. Today is Sunday which used to be my heaviest drinking day of the week, that’s saying something trust me! I would be into the wine by 9am at the latest and knock back 4-5 bottles over the day. Needless to say I would then start my week on Monday morning feeling ashamed, anxious, gutted, fragile, helpless you name it. I’d get through as much of the day as I could before getting back on the turps to feel ‘better’. What a cycle and what a bloody mess. Today about 3pm I had a real moment of feeling so happy and proud that I wasn’t drinking I actually said to myself, out loud with a big smile on my face and almost involuntarily “this is so much better!” And it is, it’s really, really, really is. I want to stay like this forever. Happy Sunday everyone you are all AMAZING! Bring on Day 21, bring on three weeks sober and bring on Monday morning I can’t wait for ya!!

  • Home in bed after dinner out with wife and friends. New place in town, was great and super busy. 6 of us, 3 had a couple of drinks the other 3 didn’t. Yes I was one of those who didn’t, I had a Karma Cola, eat way to much, loved catching up with friends and didn’t miss not boozing. There you have it, wow!
Been reading the LS blog every night. I love everything I read but particularly the little details someone will mention that just jump out of the screen at me! I’m talking about absolutely relating to doing the exact same thing, or reading something that hadn’t occurred to me but just makes so much sense.
Feeling really good and as always so pleased to have found this site. Need to sleep now as up early for Market Day tomorrow.

    Day 18, catch ya later!

  • Sober weekend all done. Super busy one including watching the ABs without being plastered in a long long time. Thanks for all the support, Day 13 catch ya later!

  • phoenix0407 posted an update 1 month ago

Hi guys it’s been a while. After 80 days sober, longest stretch by a long way, I decided to have a few drinks one day. That was over 6 months ago and I’ve been hitting it hard, really hard. I had last Monday off work, first for a long time as I run my own business. When my wife came home from work that evening I was 4 bottles of wine and half a bottle of whisky deep. The wine I can handle, I’ve been drinking it like water everyday the last 6 months but adding the whisky tipped me over. I ended up in bed, vomiting into a bucket at 7pm at night.

I’m super high functioning so I was up early for a 7.30am meeting. I felt shaky and fragile but pulled it off. Wife rang me later that morning and told me how I’d opened up on my struggle with booze and the pressure of the business. She was super supportive. She suggested I give up the drinking (even though she only knows about a fraction of the amount I actually consume). And then and there I decided that I would.

So hear I am, I’m back again. Will be day 7 tomorrow and I’m feeling good. I’m being kind to myself and eating loads of chocolate as I get mad sugar cravings without the booze. First two nights were horrible, couldn’t sleep, sweated through the sheets but the last couple of nights I’m starting to get a reminder of how absolutely amazing a proper restful nights sleep is without a body full of toxins.

Feeling good yes but this is only the very start of what has to be a life long journey now. We have our first baby due early November after years of trying and heartbreak. I need to step up and be the man I know I can be for my business, my wife and kid AND FOR ME!

I got to 80 days of sobriety through the support I got from everyone on LS so I’ll be checking in everyday even if I don’t post. Thank you and Kia Kaha.

Welcome back @phoneix0407. How are you going to cope with your stress. Have you got a plan in place? Counsellor, meditation, exercise, learning about addiction getting support from this site. Alcohol doesn’t help reduce stress as I discovered. Congratulations on your baby.

    • Thanks Aria. My plan is literally all of the things you suggest. I’m seeing a councillor at the start of August and I’m rediscovering meditation. I love exercise and train everyday but looking forward to feeling a thousand times better when I do! Thanks for the support.

    • Welcome back 😁 keep checking in as you say, that’s what I do, everyday. You got this, the happiness that comes from being sober as you know, outweighs the need for the false happy buzz that booze gives us. I’m so glad you’re here. Take care and we will see ya round these parts, and HUGE congrats on baby, that’s so exciting, bless ✨

    • @phoenix0407 – sounds like you have all the reasons in the world to put alcohol in your rearview. Wishing reasons made it easy. As you know, it won’t be easy but it will be worth it. I’m Day 344 today. You can do this and we can help. The first days are nail biters. Stick with LS and the days will turn to weeks. We’re all on the AF journey together. Good Luck.

    • Hello @phoenix0407. You landed on the only real decision that actually works: ‘a life long journey.’ No alcohol ever again. Period.

Big congrats on your baby – and on the incredible love and support of your wife. Sounds like you have everything in your corner to make this happen. Your life is on the upswing. Visit often. Day 145 here and sending best wishes.

    • congrats, @phoenix0407, for making the decision not to pick up. glad you are getting through the withdrawals, what a pain, but just think of how healing for your body, your brain, your family. best, keep on posting.

    • @pheonix0407 you have made such an amazing decision for you, your wife, your business and your baby (congratulations!!). You know you can do this as an 80 day stretch is something to be proud of. We’re here to support you!

@bluewren sensational, sensational work on 72 days!!
Right, this work thing. Really sorry to hear that and that you are struggling. I left/lost/was pushed out of my job earlier this year and it scared that crap out of me. But, I made the decision to take control of my own happiness and knew the BIGGEST change I could make was to finally quit drinking. My Day 1 was literally the day I left paid employment and not drinking the absolute opposite of how I would have normally dealt with what happened. But here I am around the same sober day total as you with a clear head, a focus and an “I will not be beaten” attitude that to be honest I had absolutely no idea I possessed.
Being out of a toxic environment is the best thing, honestly. Yes it’s terifying as sadly the mortgage won’t pay itself but you WILL find another job because you are AMAZING. So back yourself and stay strong. I can’t wait to hear in the very near future about how much happier you are without that crap to deal with, how much better life is and how exciting the future is for you!

    Much love x

Last week I had some really tough days but after posting on LS and then reading the amazing responses things got better and I’m back on track and feeling good.

Incredible to be able to share with the amazing people on this page and to be able to reach out and have the understanding and love that comes back and just makes so much sense. Its given me the power to be able to make it to 60 days and without LS I would have cracked and be back to feeling lost and hopeless.

  • Hi team! So I’ll wake up to Day 56 tomorrow, a full 2 months.
    But I’m really struggling.
Up until a week ago was solid as a rock, even with lots of crap to deal with. Now that’s sorted and things are on the up, new business is really taking off after just two weeks and all I want to do is drink. Honestly I’m thinking about it constantly now. Haven’t cracked but worried that I will and then I lose so so much.
I need that fire in my belly to stay strong and I need it back quick.
Any advice from LS legends very much appreciated.

    • Congrats on Day 56! My advice is distract, distract, distract! And lots of self care! Ride this out and you will be all the stronger for it… Keep checking in here X

    • Hi @phoenix0407, amazing work on two months sober!!! You are an inspiration to me!!

I don’t have any great advice to give (day 12 here for me), but two weeks into this, just wanted to remind you that you don’t want another Day 1. Day 1 is the worst. First, if you’re like me, and you decide to give in, you won’t just have one or two glasses or pints (whats the point in that?!), you will go big and get super messy drunk. So you’ll be dealing with a hangover, which sucks. But even worse are the feelings inside. Its that disappointed feeling of failing at something that really matters, something that you know deep in your core, is whats best for you. That is where the guilt and shame creep in (for me, anyway).. so there’s that, on top of the damn hangover.
But you can AVOID that awful Day 1 bullshit!!! You have 56 precious days!! You fought hard to get them, and you can keep them. You can do this. xox

      • You have done so well Phoenix 0407. Keep logging in here and just keep reading and writing. 56 days IS so precious as sunshinestace said. Please don’t give it away. I am only day 16 and I have struggled these past 2 days but instead of a drink I come on here. Do you think there may be some self sabotaging going on? Your new business is going really well….you really deserve to succeed. One counsellor I went to see said that in my childhood I developed the belief that I was unworthy and I self sabotaged a lot. I felt I didn’t deserve to succeed and if I was praised for anything I felt like a fraud. You have so much to lose for the fleeting relief that a drink will bring. You may be feeling anxious which was always the precursor to my drinking. Taking physical action can often blow those toxic cobwebs away. I find even going out for a coffee and interacting with others is sometimes enough.. I am struggling with just being with myself too, You are not alone just keep reaching out to LS and you find many hands to hold yours.

    • @pheonix0407 Dealing with crap and drinking only makes things worse. Day 1’s are awful. You’ve got two months down – that’s great. You are missing out on absolutely nothing. Unless you want to feel worse, ill, poisoned, down really don’t go there. Just push the thoughts away and loads of selfcare x

      • I have a little mantra I repeat to myself and to anyone offering me a drink. “No thank you. I don’t drink”. It is simple but effective. You made a very wise and life changing decision 56 days ago. It is not negotiable. When you think in this way it takes all the angst away. No more will I wont I. So now that you’ve got that down you can truly thrive and so can your new business. Boozers are losers. We are winners…….and grinners. Don’t let yourself or those who love you down. Xo

      • Yes I’m with Sunshine – all of those emotions that follow a day 1 are totally shit – don’t listen to your addiction voice – how your’e feeling at the moment is way better than going back to the start again – believe it….stay strong – you can do it..x

    • I don’t have much advice, but wanted to say congrats on nearly a full 2 months. I do know that all of those great feelings you had in the first few weeks are worth the continued effort your sobriety brings!!! You can do this – you are worth this!!

    • @phoenix0407. 56 days is awesome. My suggestion is to play it forward. I have recently learned to use this tool often. I write down what I know will happen if I take that first drink. Good luck. You can do this!

    • You are doing so well… keep focused on yourself,, even if it’s eating lots, a good book or a long walk in the fresh air.. anything to take your mind off drinking… you can get through this day… lots of love. xxx

    • Lots of great advice already said @phoenix0407 – and huge congrats on 56 days! You’re doing so great! Focus on the rewards (blissful clear head, soft sheets, pillows, blankets, vivid colors outside in the beauty we don’t see when hungover, remembering every word we say-no embarrassment at 3 am, etc…) You made the decision 56 days ago – so focus on that – you decided “no drinks” – so do not pick one up. You’ve got this – because you’re worth it 🙂

    • Hang in there @phoenix0407 and this feeling will pass. So glad your business is going well. Maybe just play i5 forward, and think about turning up to a farmers market hangover, I can imagine that would be tough, and would possibly squeeze the joy out of it. Try, and distract yourself; the constant thoughts will die down, and you will be so pleased you didn’t.

    • So sorry it’s feeling hard right now. You are doing such a good thing for yourself, but those voices can sure get loud sometimes. Don’t listen to them!! I’m noticing that when those voices start up, it means I’m not practicing enough self-care. Early sobriety take so much mental energy that the self-care component is huge. Can you shift gears a bit today in order to take good care of yourself?
