Not hopeless, good on you @DaveH.

I watched a doco on Maori channel last night about the life of Janis Joplin. There was quite a lot of footage which I hadn,t seen before. It surprised me to find she died in 1970 which meant I was only 13 at that time. What a big impression she made, and even now her songs resonate in some very nostalgic way for me. Not that I ever saw any appeal…[Read more]

    • I have mixed feelings about Janis. Her level of drug and alcohol abuse was tragic, and there are some who just can’t seem to shake that off. It’s a sad fact that she’s now been gone far longer than she was alive. A warning to us all.

    • I love Janis so much. Yes her life was tragic, but there’s never been anyone quite like her since. I often play some of her old songs, Me and Bobbie McGee, Mercedes Benz and a few others , I’ve got them recorded on a mix that I play in the car. Yeah that’s me, living in the past. Reckon they just made better music back then, call me old fashioned!!!

I haven,t been on the site for a while but am happy with the way my life is progressing. Just wanted to say it,s good to read your responses DaveH and see that you,re still on here giving sound wisdom. Maybe you are someone trained in recovery counselling, or possibly even a paid member of the team. Anyway, I think your support is…[Read more]

    • Hi @Nina I can claim neither of those I’m afraid. I don’t think there is any organised “team” here as such and I’m sure that no-one is getting paid. As I understand it the website has some funding to cover basic running costs, but that’s all. We’re just a bunch hopeless drunks that have got free of alcohol and want to help others do the same. This…[Read more]

Thanks @01oceanbreeze, ,@Agirl,@enzedgirl, and @morgan. Happy Christmas and New Year to you all too. Morgan, yep still happily doing a modified bright lines thing. Basically just eating mostly vegetables, fruit, protein of whatever kind and less bread, sugar and butter. Not really depriving myself at all. The initial change seems to make the…[Read more]

    • I had a minimal day, though joined a crowd at a beach at night which was nice. And today, a couple of treats have wrecked the regime, but hey, have to break out at times, and it is so nice that it is not the same as breaking out with drugs – including alcohol in this

    • Good for you @nina. Iโ€™m eating healthier also and weight is coming off from not drinking! Bonus!! X

Hi and Merry Christmas to you all.
The sun,s shining in here, for now and I hope all the people who got a little soggy in yesterday,s rain have dried out. I am a happy non drinker mostly these days. LS is a part of me getting here. Just saying if you do have a small glass, as I did recently with my very elderly mother, it is noticable that red…[Read more]

    Hi Kerris,
I was happy to read this after meeting you last summer – what a buzz and so good that you and yr man could make that trip together and make his 50th something pretty special…..might even get to Europe myself one day, maybe for my man,s 70th or my 65th. Guess I,d better stop talking about it and make it happen!
    Have another gelato and…[Read more]

Love it. Songs of my youth. Saw them at Western Springs. And RP is such a lovely man even if he has rounded out a bit i.e. mellowed.

That,s something I found very hard as well. When son (or daughter, I,m guessing) has a messy relationship break down. Found myself with physical stress symptoms (clicky jaw) and it,s like the heart break is our own. Luckily this sad time passes and they go on to form new relationships, thank heaven for that.

    Hi again,
Thanks heaps @wordsmatter, @kitten, @gage, @honestjoy, @delgirl68, @kate1975. Your responses really helped me get over myself today even if my bright lines got blurred and I headed for the yoghurt meusli bars.
I,m liking the refreshing booch in very small quantities, and will experiment with as little sugar as poss. Today it was less…[Read more]

    Hi Gage,
Just read your post, no wonder you want to drink. It makes me feel grateful for my sober life just now and maybe appreciate it(sobriety) a little more. I,m around your age without the challenges that you have (parenting 3 x 18). I can imagine how different it will be in years to come when maybe having triplets will not be such a thankless…[Read more]

I also love waking with no hangover for all the same reasons that Lotta listed and it,s been a good few years of mostly being happy with giving the piss a miss. However, maybe it,s the time of year, maybe the time of woman! because I recognise this niggly feeling prompted by a couple of interactions this week.
Taking time( just a few hours) to…[Read more]

    • Hey there @Nina you have so beautifully verbalised questions, conversations, debates, musings that I have and will continue to have. I can only speak for myself and for me it is about learning and understanding what sober is because I haven’t been for the longest time. And like you and the other good people on this site I’m going into this as open…[Read more]

    • hey @nina, i hear you, but you have so much time under your belt, give the piss a miss, my friend. remember the piss is carcinogenic.

    • I can see why those comments annoy you. You ARE doing what’s best for you. Good for you…you are not “sad” you’re AWESOME!

    • Oh, I love the observation of archetypes. And that shitty comment about not drinking is sad and one should be able to moderate. Hmmmm I’m 50, and my boozy friends still drink like they’re 20, there’s no moderation going on there. And the ones that do actually moderate – they’re pretty goddamn boring actually. Sometimes I kind of like that being a…[Read more]

    Hi @Marmite and all,

Love the idea of a get together at the northern end of the Sth, or anywhere where there are hot pools.
Not possible just now for me though, thanks for the thought.

That sounds like a good start to a new life on the farm @SoberCanadianMom. Good on yr hubby but even so, you have done it for a week, which is awesome as the weeks turn into months.
I reckon beer starts to taste like water after enough years of drinking it, even if we now have some cool sounding, and very trending indie beer brewers.

    • Good Morning @Nina! Huge thanks to you for the kind comment and I love your drink of choice. I will definitely have to try soda and lime. When I do, I will send a “Cheers” your way!!

Firstly, big high five to Mrs D for your 7. I loved reading that being more in contact with your own feelings gives you more understanding of others feelings. This is the kind of empathy we need and I also love not being in the grip of alcohol fuelled reactions. sOBER i CAN still react in a more measured way. That does not exclude…[Read more]
