It appears that Pearl Jam and I parted ways after No Code lol. But thanks for the nostalgic memory jolt @song-bird 🎶

  • NathanB posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 6 days ago

❤I don’t recall the track but I immediately recognise the sound of their last album – was it No Code? I listened to it a lot when I was 17 – a melancholic soundtrack to my troubled teens lol.

    • Hi @NathanB – this song is from their album Yield . Eddie Vedder’s voice is like melted butter, I discovered him late in life, mainly through Neil Finn and the concert 7 Worlds Collide. I think all the songs I love in the world are melancholic 😉 I found a live video and they were very young , not a grey hair in sight 🙂

Good call. We are introducing donation capability soon, I wonder if it could be tied in with that somehow.

@enzedgirl, yes! That is the kind of LS t-shirt we need. Where did you get it? I’ve heard members mention T-Shirts a couple of times, do we think it’s something we should look at?

    • oh yes! there was a thread about t-shirt ideas recently, i’ll tag you on it

i’ll try to remember where i got the came/saw/left early thing from …..

      • i think a key thing is, with the t-shirt idea, make it short sharp and funny (like booze is shit thank god i quit), or make it a little bit cryptic (like my current avatar picture) so that only people who are AF would kind of get it …?

No @malibustacey, you’re not out of the picture – It is a model, we purchased the image 🙈

  • Kia ora koutou, how are we? I just wanted to share an example of one of the display ads for Living Sober which is currently appearing for the entire month on nzherald.co.nz, newshub.co.nz, tvnz.co.nz and at about 30 other sites. The video is also being advertised in video content on the same sites.

Just to ad on to what @mrs-d said, this campaign will run for one month. It will include both the “pre-roll” video ads using the Living Sober video as well as graphic “display” ads such as this one:

@mrs d @enzedgirl – The ads will appear on NZ and overseas based sites, but the geo-targeting will be to NZ visitors to those sites only. The following interests are also being targeted: Home & Family; Society & Culture, Arts & Entertainment.

Thank you @finallyhere. Day 43 sounds massive, that must be exciting to feel a mental shift unfolding. Hmmm, I was thinking of going down there for the weekend, maybe I do that so the emphasis really on being a son.

    • Very tough for to see. Very tough for your mum. I hope he has a moment of real realisation as so many here have, and gets the poisonous stuff and life wasting habits out of his life.

  • Thank you all for your patience during this transition to the new Living Sober. We plan to take a more evolutionary approach to improving Living Sober going forward – so more frequent small changes instead of fewer big disruptive ones. We’re pleased with the positive feedback. But we are gutted that people have lost posts on the new site. But we have new resolve to isolate the issue so we can be categorical about it’s nature and whether it can be fixed. If there is some kind of software limitation we need to understand it so we can explain it to you and then you can avoid it.

So, I am also using this post in the hope that it might be lost in an effort to replicate the issue. So I am writing a longer post over a two hour period which is great because it give me a chance to get something off my chest…

My dad really struggles with alcohol and has done as far back as a spate of anger related anger issues when I was a child. Mum mostly lives in my parents holiday home because she finds it so stressful living with him, he could be focusing on organising the build of their retirement home but he doesn’t, he appears to be spending more money that budgeted for retirement – possibly on pokies, and he lost his licence two years ago for the third time. His most recent effort at making changes involved 6 weeks of treatment in Thailand 18 months ago but those gains have slowly melted away. He makes some attempts to do helpful things such as signing up to join Men’s Shed, but even that only happened after Mum made the phone call for him.

You would think that working for the Drug Foundation serves me well in being able to help in some way. If he was a friend, I would have a discussion with them using some motivational interviewing I learned at Youthline. And I would try to re-surface their reasons for wanting to change their drinking. My friends usually welcome such discussions. But with Dad, I just don’t know. I was never close to him growing up and today we have a…[Read more]

    • Hi @NathanB, the site is going fine for me, I’m getting used to the new changes, my thing was the daily sober counter, I liked the old one as it was big and bold for me, I’d check on it at least twice a day, now I’m day 43, I’ve started a mental shift, change is good and little blips along the way happen, the wrinkles will be ironed out soon.
Rough and raw stuff with your Dad. I have not had a parent with an alcohol or gambling problem and others who have will give you some tips I’m sure. What I believe is that you’re in a tough spot. Your actual role here is son. I would spend the time looking out for your mum and yourself first, however as a professional with a background in this field it is also like you have a responsibility to try and start the conversation with him, even if it is just for your mums sake and for yours, if it works fantastic, if it doesn’t at least you tried. It sucks that parents stuff things up sometimes, we don’t mean too, but we do. You sound like a great son.

    • Hi – the site is working great for me thanks. Although I haven’t posted until now since the change. The family presence of someone with a serious alcohol problem is something I know intimately myself. In my experience they dont want to know unless they are down and out and you are seen as a nuisance. It’s such a shame because you just want to help them see the way but we need to do this for ourselves. A gentle word couldn’t hurt though as food for thought for him. I have done this many times with my parent. I also have my own issues now with alcohol and do not want to repeat the long history of problems I still see in this parent today so I have chosen to stop and it has changed everything within me. All the very best with how you proceed. 🙂

      • Thank you @finallyhere. Day 43 sounds massive, that must be exciting to feel a mental shift unfolding. Hmmm, I was thinking of going down there for the weekend, maybe I do that so the emphasis really on being a son.

      • Thanks @peacemind. Realistic advice I think.

    • Hi @NathanB, if he’s already been to rehab he knows he has a problem and you talking to him probably will just build that wall higher. It sounds like he’s lost in his addiction and unless something happens to really shake his world, he won’t stop. It’d be nice if you could get him to look at this site and read all the posts. Just to get him thinking. You and your Mum could pull the “we won’t talk to you until you admit you have a problem” card. And then stick to it. That might open a door for conversation. But, unless he’s ready to do it for himself, he won’t stop. Thanks for working on the site!

      • I will mention Living Sober to him… might have to delete this post if we were to get into it. But he is really quite internet illiterate unfortunately.

    • Hey there @nathanb have you heard of Rational recovery- might give you and your Mum some ideas on how to approach your old man, or if not how to protect yourself, although it sounds as though you’ve been doing that for a long time. Cheers on the new site-primo 🙂

Yup. Or replace them with something new.

I think everyone has said everything I might have added. @enzedgirl hit the nail on the head in saying that our other online sites/tools lack the community factor that Living Sober has. We are thinking about how we can develop those tools in a more social direction since that is part of what makes Living Sober so helpful to people.

Remembering slumber parties from childhood, those turned out to become alcohol-free memories that have stuck around for life and pop into my consciousness now and then.

@mrs-d and I met with our technical partner last week. This is one of the challenges we need to address. I’m working on a guest post or something like that to get a discussion started on the path ahead.

A lovely idea, I look forward to see it when it’s done.

@thisismesober, I wont be terribly active in Living Sober since @mrs-d is generally our eyes and ears around here. In regard to Kava, we happen to be working on info to put on the NZ Drug Foundation website in the near future. Basically, I can tell you it’s a depressant, like alcohol, but there is little evidence that people who use it regularly become dependent on it. This means, if they stop taking it, withdrawal symptoms are unlikely. That said, there are some safety concerns about kava. Cases of liver damage and even some deaths have been traced to its use. @ctf24338, since you’re concerned about your own use, it might be helpful to talk about it more and consider ways you could either stop, or at least bring your use down to a level that is comfortable.
