That’s exactly it @timetobesober if we don’t take care of us, we end up resenting everyone and feel worse, which makes yo want to pick up a drink. Spain is lovely, bet it’s a tad hot though, we are in the north west of England, lovely countryside and not too far from Cumbria so a tad cool and wet😂😂 keep on this site and it keeps us all grounded, really love all the new friends I have made. I feel that we are alike, shouldering everyone’s problems, neglectin* ourselves and letting life slip by in a glass.. hang n there xx

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate, the most important thing I was told once when like you was running myself ragged look8ng after loads of people and situations was to try to become a little selfish… you have to look after you…. there is not a thing you can do about their drinking it has to be something they choose to do, but you can’t spend your energy worrying …read the power of now by erckert tolle, it really puts everything in perspective.. can’t suggest anymore but sending you a huge virtual 🤗 hug … by the way what country are you now in xxxx

    • Thank you for the book reference @mandles, will look it up! I do have a tendency to shoulder other people’s problems and I bottle up a lot until I blow my top. That’s one of my problems-I need to learn to communicate my needs and be a little more “selfish” so that this does not happen… thanks for your lovely reply xxxx oh, and I am in Spain now (from Germany via England, haha)

      • That’s exactly it @timetobesober if we don’t take care of us, we end up resenting everyone and feel worse, which makes yo want to pick up a drink. Day 21 over with, was a lovely day with my daughter, we went to a vegan fair, gardened and had take away curry, had no desire to drink and now settl8ng down for the night with a nice cup of tea .. night night everyone xx

  • Mandles posted a new activity comment 1 day, 22 hours ago

Well done Lucy, we have got this.. it is annoying when everyone else is drinking, but think how his head will be in the morning. How’s your mum? Hope she is ok. Everyone has all gone to bed and instead of my old Saturday night on the wine, I am on good old Yorkshire tea.. night night xxx

  • Mandles posted an update 2 days, 12 hours ago

I have done it, I have outed myself to my hubby and explained what the problem is and that I really cannot drink…. ever….. he was a bit taken back and said but why do you always feel the need to smash it… I explained it’s just something in my brain which keeps going back and back for more, and there are others like it out there who are wired the same. He is totally onboard, and it will be eAsier at home now as he will suppor5 me 100% of the way. So that’s my news this morning, off to a Vegan fair now with my daughter 😂😂 have a lovely day peeps

    • That is a brave step and so well done, I had to do that to.. never ever having alcohol.. My brain is obsessed with the stuff but being here and reading posts it does subside in time. So we will battle on together @Mandles.. even if were having a crap day just think of all the good ones to come.. all clear headed and happy.. enjoy your day with your daughter and tell me all about the vegan fair later.. look forward to hear from you. xx proud of you x

    • That’s great @mandles ! So good to have your man on board as your support crew!

    • YYaaa you. Wish I could have been as open with my husband. He knows, but no real conversation about it. No real ‘atta a girl’ going on here. Good for you! Sounds like you really got this. Enjoy your day!

    • @Mandles Oh such a good post to wake up to! Proud of you for talking to your husband! I have been going through the same. I kept telling him something vague like “I think I need to cut back on drinking, I’m spending too much on it” or hedging around the fact that I can’t moderate. I have just finally started to tell him how bad the problem actually was and that I struggle with moderation. He has been nothing but supportive and loving. Sounds like your husband is too. I’m so so happy for you and well done. 🙂

Hi to all you lovely sober tribe, how has your day/evening gone. I am currently just winding up Day 20 and feeling good, excited to get towards nearly one month sober, I even rejected a chocolate liqueur 😂😂we went out last night for a curry at the local curry house just opened and Heineken zero got me through.
We travelled down by train today to see our daughters and sharing a four seat on the train, got chatting to a lovely guy who is retired and worked in a local hospital. We chatted about this and that and started talking about health, he told us he had pancreatitis earlier in the year and it was the most excruciating painful thing he had ever experienced, being a medic, he said it was probably alcohol induced, he had been a heavy drinker, and had binged the weekend before it happened. He said it was so frightening he has not touched a drop since, and it really made me think…. we drink this stuff down and don’t really know, or rather I don’t, what it actually does to your body, as it seems not to have any immediate adverse reaction, if you know what I mean… anyway.. the upshot is it has reinforced me not wanting to drink .. so have a great weekend peeps xx

    • good on you at day 20! yes its scary what alcohol does, i keep trying to work out what is addiction, what is real information,, what is bs, i think theres a lot of bs about addiction because we don’t understand it all. But facts are alcohol is a poison to us, whether it makes us high or feel happy or whatever, to our bodies it is poison! makes you think. why we ever got started on it..

    • Congrats on day 20 🙂

    • @mandles congrats on day 20,Im coming up behind you day 15 for me today, to be honest struggling a bit last two days but to be expected and hanging on in there. My Mum had pancreatitis not alcohol induced but caused by inflamed gall bladder that she ended up having removed, and yes she said the pain was off the scale. Important to remind ourselves of the damage we can do, and the health we are giving ourselves by nurturing and respecting our bodies. I’ve also been reading some grim stories about young people with terminal liver failure from drinking, and their tragic battle to stay alive, and yet some still fatally drink themselves to death, how heartbreaking for them and their families. The threat of lethal damage from alcohol should never be underestimated. I’ve been on the AL free wines and they’ve got me through so far, gonna give the AL free beer a go, especially with curry bet they’re yum x much love to you you’re an inspiration X

      • @Noodle71 you and I are right around the same timeline for committing to being AF, so I feel your struggles! I have the same mindset as you – it is to be expecting. I think just reminding myself there will be difficult periods of temptation instead of trying to deny them has really helped me surf through them. Even on Day 14 for me – they are already starting to be more spaced out and I am not spending nearly as much time thinking about buying alcohol. 🙂

@Mandles – boy I am only just now starting to see what a strong “it won’t happen to me though” attitude I had about the dangers of heavy drinking. I seriously kept thinking that “maybe someday” I would have issues if I kept on drinking more and more, but I was so so blind to the effect it was already having on me. I was sleeping poorly, very restless, headaches on sober days which should have been a huge indicator which I missed until I finally stopped drinking 14 days ago… and of course being puffy/bloated/weight gain. All of this is turning around now and it has honestly shaken me how much of a toll all that alcohol was taking on me with me being in complete denial!! Congrats on 20 days – one month here we come!! Hope you had a lovely visit with your daughters 🙂

@lucy I am good thanks, sorry to hear about your mum,it’s things like that which send us over the edge and get us reaching for the wine. Glad to hear your keeping strong, I have a bottle of sains fizzy a/c free in the fridge and will enjoy a glass or two with my dinner later. Just think how good it is facing each day with a clear head.. keep up the good work and bill g hug xx

Another early night last night so Day 16 done and dusted, why am I waking up so tired? I sleep all night quite deeply I think, but still am sitting here yawning after a good 8 hours sleep…anyway off to do the day, hang in there all you lovely fellow sober people and I will enjoy logging on tonight to see how everyone’s day/evening went

    • Good on u @Mandles. I felt tired for about six weeks when I’ve got AF in past. Think it’s our body recovering from the shit poison we put in it. This will pass and you will feel great 😁

    • I have been incredibly tired as well Mandles, since I had my last drink 28 days ago. I thought I’d feel better and be waking up refreshed. It’s a bit disheartening, but good to hear that this may be part of the process.

    • Whenever you put your body through a dramatic change, for the better or worse – fatigue is pretty common. Not sure if you have heard of it but I have done several rounds of the Whole30 in the past (thirty days of eating only whole foods) – and even though it’s a very healthy meal plan, it would cause overwhelming tiredness at first as my body adjusted to the work of digesting healthy foods. My guess is that this is similar and your body is adjusting to a diet that does not contain alcohol, and is working hard to create a new normal. It may feel disheartening, but I imagine it is going to get so much better soon. 🙂 I should add that I am waking up tired right now too – but still feels better than waking up hungover!!

    • Your doing great @Mandles! The physical and mental healing just takes time. Your very physically active, from what I’ve read, and your body is also going through dramatic changes without the alcohol. It takes a while for the organs to heal properly and function normally and healing takes energy. I’m 4 months in and am still having to recognize things for what they are within this process. We are not machines. We can’t purchase a part and be fixed. Rest when your tired and pamper yourself.

    • Yes. That happened to me too for the first couple of weeks. I also had a mysterious bout of excruciating muscle pains in the lower part of both of my legs. From my knees to my feet just ached constantly! So very strange I actually consulted a cardiologist thinking that perhaps a developed blood clots. Thankfully got the all clear. So took lots of hot baths and got lots of rest and after about a week or so they disappeared just as they came. I think alcohol just screws with everything in your body – evidently from the head to the feet! :-).

Be extra kind to yourself. You’re going through a lot – more that I think we really realize – but it’s worth it once you come out the other side. Have a wonderful day.

    • Well done on Day 16 @mandles! I appreciate you all sharing your experience of feeling tired. At Day 21 I’m still experiencing feeling super tired, too. Here’s one more reason to add to the pile of why we don’t want to revisit these early sobriety days ever again! 😉 Have a wonderful day everyone. @ginny @megs @leslielily @lee-2 @aprilsfool

    • @ginny @megs @leslielily @lee-2 @aprilsfool @mandles I just realized that I should share with you all…I started taking multivitamins a few days ago, and focusing on vitamin Bs. I have had a lot more energy during the day. I still get tired at night and want to go to bed early, but it has helped. All that alcohol intake was preventing our bodies from absorbing certain vitamins, so that might be a part of the fatigue. Thought I’d share in case it helps you, too! I’m going to ask a doctor about recommended doses for me soon.

      • Thats very good information @jmtn! In my case with the leg pains, it occurred to me that I was drinking extraordinary amounts of water – and therefore peeing all the time. One of the first signs of low potassium is leg cramps … duh! I immediately began upping my potassium via my diet. I’m sure that did the trick. Just as I’m sure the B will help your fatigue. Damn! Alcohol sure wrecks havoc! So glad you found that out. It will make being sober even happier.

      • @jmtn Ah! I didn’t even think of that! Good recommendation, thank you! (I also am always wanting to go to bed early at night but I don’t see that as a bad thing, tbh – keeps me out of trouble!)

        • @aprilsfool Good point on the potassium! Alcohol totally messes us up in so many ways…I’ve been learning so much through the books I’ve been reading. I’m trying to have a healthy diet, too, but it just wasn’t cutting it.
@leslielily Nothing wrong with early bedtime! Keeps me out of trouble, too. Weirdly enough, I have enough energy to crank on some needed chores tonight. First time I’ve been able to stay up and be productive in quite a while!

Well done for how well your doing, hope your mum continues to improve, its things like that which set us back again, but you seem so strong. It’s my husbands best friend who keeps on at me, he is a heavy drinker and like me no moderate button, he keeps saying when you start back, we are all going on a big holiday together in October, so he says you need to start up again before the holiday so you won’t get wasted … like you, I am staying firm.

Hope everyone has had a fab sober weekend, I did. It’s been really busy but despite going out for dinner Friday and tonight I have remained strong. Stuck to the Heinekan zero and the alcohol free wine but it’s been a lot of temptation. My friend keeps asking me when are you starting back on it again, I said I need to find my moderate button and until I can find it, I am staying off alcohol.
But seriously, I don’t think I have one, it’s either all or nothing, pretty much with everything I do, I am either not doing it, (what ever it is.. be it ice cream, running, drinking or peanut butter oat cakes.. which caused a 8lb weight gain in 2 weeks😂😂 I can’t seem to moderate so unfortunately I am going to have to stay off the wine.
I miscalculated last week and can honestly report I am just finishing day 15 so hopefully another good sober week. Big hugs to all xx

    • Hi Mandles! I also thought maybe I would just stay off it until I could moderate and I also am now re-thinking whether I ever actually could. I’m beginning to feel it’s not worth finding out. Good job getting to 15! <3

Day 13, and and had a small mishap this morning, managed to reverse into a wall and smashed the back rear light, not good… oh well will have to get it fixed. Spent the day working in the sun and cut 3 lawns… back is sore but have remained resolute and not gone to liquid anesthetiser, instead a hot shower and met my friend for a drink at the local, She was a little shocked when a asked for fever tree tonics but I just told her I was done with drinking for a while. Cat on my lap, alcohol free wine in my glass, sainsbury do quite a good one and hubby stocked up for me at 5he weekend. Just pleased to get past day 13 and off to bed in a bit with a hot chocolate and you guys 😂😂

    • Great job socialising AF and sober and that your hubby is supportive stocking up. It all helps. Day 13 done and dusted…fantastic

Day 12 today and the sun is shining,, it’s my RSPCA day today, I work as a voluntary receptionist at the centre booking animals in and out, answering the phone and cuddling cats😂 we are plann8 * to go to 5he cinema tonight so I will be designated driver as it’s in the next village, go to see Yesterday, bout the world if the Beatles hadn’t existed😂.
This is the longest I have gone without alcohol for months and I am feeling like I have got this … this site really helps, posting updates everyday helps to stay committed, I have also recently been diagnosed with a wheat intolerance so not have I only had to give up alcohol, I have also had to forgo bread, bickies, cakes, doughnuts and all manner of yummy stuff that contains wheat flour… even alcohol free beer😕
Anyway back to the start of day 12, can’t wait till I am posting 112😂😂. Have a great day/evenin* everyone xx

    • Awww that sucks about the wheat intolerance! At least you’ve been diagnosed 🙂 try and stock up on yummy wheat free snacks and treats! It’ll help a lot! And I can’t wait to see you post about day 112!! You’ll be amazed how quickly it’ll come about! Keep going you’re doing amazing

    • Well done on day 12. Sorry to hear about the wheat intolerance. If you still crave an alcohol free beer, you might want to investigate Asahi Dry Zero, which I believe is made without wheat or barley and is gluten free. It is available from a few places in NZ (Moore Wilson’s in Wellington). I think it is made using soy instead, which might still be an issue if you have an intolerance to that. Please do your own research though as I am neither a doctor nor a nutritional scientist!

    • We’ll have to have a virtual celebration when we reach day 112. Like you….I can’t wait xx🥳

    • It was really good, well worth a view… a feel good movie which you didn’t hav3 to really concentrate on… hav3 a good day xxx

Well done and good luck on day 10, we used to have Fench students stay and it was always great fun… filled them up on bread an potatoes, avoided marmite unless they were particularly horrid and took them to a London 😂😂 it’s much easie4 sober, I know I was usually hung over at the time which made it particularly hard. Your friend needs you to drink to justify her drinkin* to the students, so stay strong, I know you will. I know I read somewhere that friends don’t like it when we stop drinking because it causes them to question themselves … have a great day xx

Day 10 and woken up feeling less grumpy, not sure if I am 100% cheerful, but feel much better than yesterday. Thank you for all your supportive comments.

Hubby has just brought me in an early morning cuppa and I have to take him to the station this morning, which means I have to pick him up tonight around 10.30om (He has a big business meeting in London and it’s a 4 hr trip to ours). I won’t be drinking tonight as I will be driving to the station so I know I won’t get tempted. I have never had so much as a shandy when I know I will need to drive, think my driving is bad enough without the influences 😂 the stupid thing is though… before I decided to quit I would be the driver, get home at 11.00pm and would I make a cuppa and join hubby in bed while he snores away …NO .. of course not,,,, I felt the need to catch up and would drink either half or a bottle of wine I had popped in the fridge before we went out, before I stumbled up the stairs …WHY ..
anyway, I digress… it’s tuesday morning of day 10. I have gardens to do, people to see and places to be, so best stop rabbiting on on here and finish my cuppa and do the day… have a great day/evening peeps xx

    • @mandles I have found those low days come but if you ride them out there is a good one close behind it😀

    • It’s good you can recognize you are feelng glum! A normal emotion. Good plan for an early night. Only 1 more day until all the alcohol is out of your system. Then it’s a mind tussle. Well done!

    • An early night sounds like the perfect strategy @mandles. Sleep well and wake sober!

    • Thanks @lucy don’t know what’s wrong, and hopefully will be feeling full of beans tomorrow … be day 10 tomorrow and that’s double digits xx

    • @Mandles I had a day like that 2 days ago and started to wonder if I would ever start to feel better but today just starting to feel brighter, clearer and a bit more energy. The low days are just bloody awful but the good news is they don’t last.

This time, blogging and this amazing group is helping, I have made it past Day 8 and am in it for the long haul, not say8ng forever at the moment but want to get to triple figures.
