Hey there @jennah , fellow traveller… Great that you are loving the AF WOL πŸ™‚ … I have mixed feelings about it to be honest. Feel better being AF but do miss drinking if that makes sense? But will continue to be AF as it is much much better πŸ™‚ . Have you been finding it difficult not to drink?

    • Oh yes, it makes perfect sense @JB.OB!! I’ve been working at staying AF for a long, long time. The problem when I go back to it I always end up back in that soul sucking hole (that’s what it is for me) The only reason it is not difficult this time is because I had an aneurysm on July 13. I have doctors orders for no alcohol so it is not an option πŸ™‚ I see this as my big chance to get sober and stay sober and take all the positives out of it. I believe that the binge that I had on July 10 may have been a contributing factor to having the aneurysm. I was very fortunate to come out of it alive. Scary stuff.

  • JB.OB posted an update 4 weeks ago

Hi… how do you get by recipes that contain alcohol… red wine for example? I assume the alcohol content disappears on cooking? Or is it that incorrect and best to avoid it all together? Assuming I can have the bottle in the house without drinking in the first place.

    • Ro replied 4 weeks ago

I had a struggle with risotto. Risotto nights were big drinking nights as I used to buy an extra bottle as I hated parting with any of my drinking wine, so I’d end up drinking 1 and 3/4 bottles on risotto nights 😔So I didn’t cook it for well over a year. Just don’t bother with those recipes. People will tell you that not all the alcohol is cooked off. Fucking ridiculous – ‘oh Im just going to sit here and eat 5kilos of risotto to get the equivalent of a1/4c of wine’ – ah no you’re not. I have had red and white wine and brandy in my cupboards for months. No problem cos I don’t drink. I think it’s probably best you avoid those recipes until you’re secure in your sobriety

      • Ro replied 4 weeks ago

        P. S im a cook. The recipes that ask for wine or whatever don’t taste the same without the alcohol, but you can just omit it.

        • Yep I cooked risotto last night and just used vegetable stock and made sure the soffrito was full of flavour. I’m used to cooking without alcohol nowadays anyway since having my children.

      • Wow… thnx I best avoid it…thnk u, yes I think best to avoid at this stage

    • Hi @jb-ob I was surprised to find that red wine in cooking DID still trigger me. The red wine in a jus I was served in a restaurant really set me off. This was 7 years after my last drink! It was triggering but not challenging. It was easy enough to overcome it and fascinating to observe.

    • Would only complicate things for me…like wasting the rest of the wine down the sink. Never really cooked much with it. Drank it in stead. No point in adding to my cooking now.

We never get ads like that here in NZ… we get given medsafe sheets and other info sometimes with our prescriptions and that’s bad enough lol…. yes, soooo many possible side effects from medication its scary… but I guess they have to cover their butts and put across the worse case scenario… i shake my head when you are prescribed meds for something and your dr knows you already suffer from eg, anxiety and it says in the medsafe info, could make anxiety worse… i mean WTF lol???

I think you can get from GP but it’s not funded through them and quite expensive. If CADS prescribe then it is funded πŸ™‚

pharmacist gave me the MedSafe, which I guess is their job. Yes, I agree, reading them scares the shyte out of one so prob not a good idea. Just that I generally have problems with most medications. Taking Ativan (lorazepam) for anxiety which I understand can also help with seizures, but they are addictive so have to be wary of that. I have another appointment with the doctor today to try and discuss things in more detail as I felt he fobbed me off a bit the other day. Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate that.

Good on you :). Wish I could do that, just cant seem to taper no matter how good my intentions lol… perhaps I just need to get more mindset like when I gave up smoking. Funny, I can’t drink rum as had a bad experience with it many years ago… can’t even stand the smell… but have had bad experiences on other types of alcohol too but that doesn’t seem to stop me haha… funny how our bodies are…

thank you, that makes me feel better about stopping cold. I to have been drinking every night until out with the lights but my poison is wine (though I am happy to drink pretty much anything – except rum, ew yuck). Yes, I told him about my drinking (and how my stress and anxiety have increased) hence his prescribing the Zyban. He keeps trying to push different anti-depressants on me and I keep telling him I don’t want them because of the side effects I keep getting from them. I do have another appointment with him tomorrow to readdress things…

  • JB.OB posted an update 1 month, 1 week ago

hi people… i am still drinking πŸ™ … dr prescribed Zyban but haven’t taken it due to possible seizures etc, as in the following Medsafe sheet –

    ‘ Fits (seizures):
ZYBAN has been shown to cause fits
in about 1 in 1000 people. While
taking ZYBAN, fits are more likely
    if you:
β€’ if you regularly drink a lot of
    alcohol
β€’ if you regularly take sedatives ‘

and not sure it really is the right med anyway…
I am concerned about stopping drinking immediately as in dangerous detox withdrawals (yes, I am an overthinker and suffer from anxiety, which drinking clearly makes worse, and then i drink again to help with that… so round and round in a vicious circle)… how have you coped with sudden stopping please? I cant taper off as I can’t stop at just one or two drinks…

    • I used to drink 1 – 1.5 bottles of wine most week nights and more on the weekends. I just stopped. The side effects I had were grumpiness (I was surfing the urges when they came but it did make me grumpy to start with) and tiredness for the first couple of weeks. That was it for me. I’m an overthinker also, gosh it can be tiring. I found that once I decided to not drink anymore there became less to stress and worry about. I hope things become clear in your mind of what’s best for you.

      • Thank you HappyNess, its great to get feedback from others going through or have been through the same thing πŸ™‚

      • I have been SO grumpy this week. Hoping it will pass as last week I felt much more calm and composed then I ever do when drinking regularly.

    • I’m not an expert, but can tell you a bit about me. I drank, I mean DRANK, and not wine, the hard stuff. Every night until I was out with the lights. I stopped cold and didn’t suffer any ill effects. The opposite, with feeling better almost immediately.

Have you had a good, honest talk with the physician who prescribed the Zyban? Stopping your drinking and starting a new medication at the same time might be problematic. Please take good care of yourself and get good, solid advice from a health professional.

      • thank you, that makes me feel better about stopping cold. • I agree it’s really important your physician know you have a drinking problem or they may prescribe things they wouldn’t normally. Hang in there!

    • From one who used to slug it back! Like not vino but spirit. Dont read medsafe shit, gives you more farkn anxiety then necessary. I drunk 2 bottles of rum.. plus..lol slowly tapered off . Not easy.. but..
1st night drink what you do
2nd night 1 less.. blah blah no seizures. Seizures dont happen till real bad. Get diazepan or temazipan, antabuse.

      • Good on you :). Wish I could do that, just cant seem to taper no matter how good my intentions lol… perhaps I just need to get more mindset like when I gave up smoking. • I agree with @janus2. don’t read the side effects, I’m in the States on holiday at the moment and I can’t believe anyone takes medication here – the ads are a few seconds of benefits then a diatribe of side effects! I ended up a supervised medical detox in NZ (basically a nurse comes round every day and gives you some diazepam which is great for withdrawals – heavy dose in first couple of days and then drops write off). I don’t know if your doctor would prescribe that – but it is what is used to manage risk of bad withdrawals – seizures etc – in NZ, usually have to be medically supervised though.

      • pharmacist gave me the MedSafe, which I guess is their job. Yes, I agree, reading them scares the shyte out of one so prob not a good idea. • @Agent99 as an American, your post about the US and medication made me giggle. It’s ridiculous, isn’t it!? I don’t take any medications, but I always find it very ironic when ads are like, “take this and you’ll never have a migraine again! You’ll just have diarrhea, bloating, heartburn, blurred vision, depression and thoughts of suicide instead, probably!” (shaking my head)

        • We never get ads like that here in NZ… we get given medsafe sheets and other info sometimes with our prescriptions and that’s bad enough lol…. yes, soooo many possible side effects from medication its scary… but I guess they have to cover their butts and put across the worse case scenario… i shake my head when you are prescribed meds for something and your dr knows you already suffer from eg, anxiety and it says in the medsafe info, could make anxiety worse… i mean WTF lol???

@Tewy thank you, yes it would be great to get your feedback on Nalrexone… did you get prescribed through your GP? Is it subsidised etc?

    • Hi @ Jb-OB. ….No I didn’t get from GP ….I got the script through CADS programme which I’m engaging with at the moment (are you in NZ.) Ive only been taking the Naltrexone since Monday so probably not long enough to really comment yet ……I’m not sleeping well but that could be for other reasons ….. the β€˜Wine Witch’ conversations in my head seem to be a bit quieter ….could be a bit of placebo effect but who cares as long as she is kept quiet …..I will post an update again in a few more days :). Keep going well 😊👍

Thank you. He did mention Antabuse in passing but didn’t give it to me as an option. He sees me as a binge drinker as I don’t have to have a drink during the day. I am not good with antidepressants as always get the stupid rare side effects so am definitely reluctant to take Zyban. Like you, I can not restrict how much i drink either, it just creeps up on me. Always my intention to have just one, maybe two glasses but that doesn’t last. Does antabuse stop the craving? Also, does it have side effects? Which is best, Antabuse or Naltrexone. Am reluctant as I really am not good with medications across the board. Currently taking Ativan for anxiety but it is addictive so don’t want to take that too often plus it makes me really dopey (even on just half a tablet) and don’t feel with it.

    • I’ve started with Naltrexone just 4 days ago so not much feedback to give just yet I’m afraid but happy to keep you posted as to how I feel it’s working (or not working ) !!.

  • JB.OB posted a new activity comment 1 month, 1 week ago

that may be my next step if this doesn’t work…

  • JB.OB posted an update 1 month, 1 week ago

Hi guys, i have fallen completely off the wagon for the last while… in fact my drinking of wine has increased a hell of a lot… at times two bottles in a night… I have been under a lot of stress which is not an excuse but doesn’t help… so then of course I feel guilty for drinking and then I get stressed and then drink some more… So I visited my GP this morning to discuss my stress levels and my alcohol problem. He has suggested I take Zyban (you know the stop smoking medication), also known as Wellbutrin as apparently it can help with drinking as well. Have been doing some research, and it seems to me all indications say if you drink or immediately stop drinking, then Zyban is not the way to go and could be dangerous. Now I don’t know what to do… Anxiety levels have gone up even more now. Has anyone else taken Zyban before? I am lost and don’t know what to do πŸ™

    • Antabuse??

    • I’m on Wellbrutrin and you are not supposed to drink on it. It helps with cigarette cravings but not alcohol in my opinion and yes, I drank on it but I’ve been on it for 17 years. If you have never been on it and think you might drink I would advise against trying it – it is an antidepressant and changes your brain chemistry (like we need that any more than we already deal with right?)

    • I’m sorry your gp wasn’t a little more aggressive in addressing your drinking. Wellbutrin may help with your anxiety/depression but I believe the better help would be reducing your alcohol consumption. For me restricting how much I drank only led to drinking more and made me more anxious. Deciding to not drink at all removed that anxiety about how much, where, and when. Antabuse or Naltrexone if you want to try. Antabuse makes you ill and naltrexone removes the desire. Whatever you decide, we’ll be here for you!

      • Thank you. He did mention Antabuse in passing but didn’t give it to me as an option. He sees me as a binge drinker as I don’t have to have a drink during the day.
