First thing you need to do is have a cup of tea, eat a good meal, drink lots of water (to get your brain thinking) and calm down. Most of us on here have made a bit (or a lot) of an arse of ourselves with alcohol (me too). People will forget what you did yesterday eventually. You are not too old (i am 53) to give up drinking and live a calmer, more peaceful life with dignity. Maybe sit down and have a chat with your daughters and tell them truthfully whats up with the drink and apologise for anything you need to. Most of us on here have hit a rock bottom and the only way to get back up is to gather your arsenal (books, pod casts (on alcohol help), stock your fridge with alcohol free drinks, snacks and netflix for the evenings), dont let yourself get bored. exercise. And just dont drink. Maybe limit your socialising for a while to get some sober days under your belt. Day by day it will get easier. I also found stocking up on some much needed vitamins helpful. Be kind and gentle with yourself, negative talk is not productive. Its actually a very exciting time, ditching something that just doesnt serve you anymore. Well done for getting on this site. Stay close and post whenever you need to, or just read around. And remember to give yourself little treats along the way with the money you are saving not buying booze, its a great incentive. Hugs to you x

I watch an episode a night, tonight i watched him in San Francisco. Yeah, i just dont know why he would have decided his life was not worth living. Its really really sad. Well done on day 5 🙂

Oh yeah, the hangovers were horrendous werent they. Well done on nearly 7 months, really good work. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Being sober is way more relaxing and peaceful than when we were drinking isnt it. As you go along you will get stronger and things will settle down and become easier. Give yourself a wee treat for getting through the weekend sober and fabulous. 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Yes, food is a must. Well done on day 8 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 10 months, 3 weeks ago

Treat yourself kindly. Chocolate is absolutely fine, way better than wine. I still eat my chocolate in the evening if i want it and i am nearly 3 years sober. Give yourself treats as a reward for the hard work you are doing. Sobriety is hard work but in reality living with hangovers and lack of energy, guilt etc was harder. It does get easier. xx

Woo hoo!! hangover free is awesome x

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year ago

Dont you worry about letting us down. Most of us have had many day 1’s, Have you got a plan? Stocked the fridge up with nice sober drinks, lots of snacks, alcohol help reading material, organised some good movies on netflix etc. Got your self care (pampering) sorted. Made sure you are kept busy when the old wine witch starts to whisper rubbish in your ear. Its a lot easier if you are prepared. You can do this. xx

Two weeks is fantastic. Just keep on going. Promise ya it does get easier 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Tricky one. I would probably not say anything unless they start the conversation first. You know how it is when you are drinking, you dont really want anyone to question you on it and they could get quite upset at you even if you are only trying to help. x

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Sometimes getting sober can be quite an eye opener. Take special care of yourself. x

Day 25 is fantastic. Just enjoy your meal and your partner. You dont need booze to have a nice evening and tomorrow you will feel very proud of yourself. reena is right, it will get easier. 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

    Absolutely fantastic!! xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Day 22 is excellent. I had headaches in the beginning and found it difficult to drink water, but after a while (i wont lie, it took a few months) the headaches went and drinking water just became routine. Although i do try not to drink too much after 3pm otherwise i am up all night peeing. Everything does become easier, life gets more peaceful and calm. I think being patient is key, it takes the body a while to adjust. xx

    Welcome Clair 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

When you start to look around not everyone at a party or bar is smacking back the booze, there are other people not drinking for various reasons. Well done on 100 days xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

yeah, sometimes ya just gotta give yourself a break. I myself use the odd maggi cook in the pot (we call it mr maggi), when i just cant be shagged standing too long at kitchen sink. Sober sleep is the best and no 3am dry horrors. Well done xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

I ‘failed’ a lot when i was first starting to realise i had a problem, but then one time it stuck. Personally i found reading any alcohol help book (alan carr, jason vale, mrs d, craig beck) i could helped me tremendously. Also having a plan i.e. stock up the fridge with nice alcohol free drinks, exercising (to fill in empty time slots), netflix, crochet (good for keeping hands busy). Also eating well helps and i have heard that barley sugars for sugar cravings are good. 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Yep, ditch it. Life is way better without alcohol. Pretty soon you will be loving yourself like you deserve. Day 1 is fantastic 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Really proud of you @Stopthatsnotme 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

I fucked up big time as well. Nearly ruined everything (marriage etc). All you can do is be the best possible version of yourself you can be now. Dont dwell. Dwelling will eat you up and lead you back to drinking. Alcohol makes us do such stupid, stupid stuff, stuff that you would not normally do. Prove to your partner that you are sorry for what you have done by being sober and being the best mum and partner you can be. Sober life is way better, smoother and more enjoyable. Alcohol just seems to screw everything up for people (like us) who cant control it. Hugs to you, dont be too hard on yourself. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Oh no, it hurts, it really does i know. Really special that you were able to be with him, cuddle him and make his passing easier. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Good to hear your little girl is getting better. Really nice that you have influenced your mum and things are going well. x

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

You know how you felt at 3am, all alone sitting on the loo, looking at yourself in the mirror. You dont have to be wrecking cars, screaming around the neighborhood, forgetting to pick up the kids etc to have a problem with booze. We get it. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Yep, the day 1.s really suck. Just get right back to it MalibuStacey. Eat, drink lots of water, pamper yourself, give yourself some love and start being alcohol free today. You can do it. Hugs to you

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Hiya Fluffyknickers. Just checked in and reading some posts. I made an absolute arse out of myself while drinking as well. Wrote off a couple of cars, texted inappropriate things to people. I still feel shame but you know what, that shame and embarassement has helped me to stay sober. (921 days), so use the embarassment to your advantage. Alcohol makes idiots of nearly everyone, sure there are some who are always in control, but in my experience, even normal drinkers sometimes do or say some inappropriate stuff under the influence. You dont want to repeat bad behaviour, you dont want people to think badly of you. Ditching alcohol will be one of the smartest decisions you will ever make. Hugs to you. Dont dwell on the shame, move forward. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Oh @mullycatNZ i know how you feel. Even now my face gets hot when i remember the stuff i did or said pissed. you certainly are not alone in that. BUT 6 months rollicking along sober is absoutely fantastic. Well done xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

    Welcome along 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Alcohol doesnt add anything, in fact it takes away. Well done for being in your 20’s and realising this so young.

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

    Welcome 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Congratulations Lars, nearly one whole year. Well done. I had been thinking of having a drink when i go on holiday at the end of June and i am 2.5 years sober. I guess those thoughts are always just lurking in the background and i guess we just have to ignore them and know that the best thing for us is to not drink at all. We know darn well what will happen and we dont want to go back to that miserable place. xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 2 months ago

Day 17 is fantastic. Its a good idea in the early days to lay low and just concentrate on being sober. Great stuff that your hubby is supportive, he has probably seen some positive changes in you and is liking it. Yeah, it does make marriage more peaceful without the booze to stuff things up. Well done xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 3 months ago

Great that you feel good about the weekend. Its just another two days like all the rest. But you get to sleep in and do stuff that you actually want to do. No hangover for you (or me) yay xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 3 months ago

Yes, so excited. My daughter and i are going to eat butterfly cakes (with whipped cream) and drink tea. My husband asked if i was going to make cucumber sandwiches as well (thats how excited i’ve been, going on for days about it), i said no, duh i am not going that far! I do like all the pomp and ceremony of a royal wedding. So pretty…..sigh

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 3 months ago

Exactly…your whole life can be devoted to stuff that you want to do. Not be dictated by booze. No hangovers to negotiate. You will look better and feel better. It does get easier as you go along. Keep close to this site. Look after yourself and dont let other people interfere with your sobriety. Well done on day 2 xx

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 3 months ago

Thanks for your post. I had forgotten how my Saturday nights would end up when i was drinking. Yep, the first couple of drinks were great….the rest of the night would be just one big waste of time, niggling with my husband over nothing, yakking all the way through any movie we tried to watch. Waking up at 3am so thirsty and with a pounding head. It was truly awful. Being sober is tough at times, but it is a much nicer life without booze in it. 🙂

  • janabel posted a new activity comment 1 year, 3 months ago

Wine, wine waste of time….seems like its everywhere. Well done on day 17, you must be feeling pretty fabulous xx
