I must have known to come on here today. You survived that test!! And you’re stronger for it. You know you can do this, if you can survive that weekend you can survive anything.

And you know what? The cravings go, they really do. It gets easier. Stay strong you’ve got this. Elliecat x

    • You are a good cat Elliecat – so tuned in. πŸ™‚ Thanks, I do feel like the sober muscle just popped out a little bit more. But it has taken a little bit of energy to grow it this time. x

Yay @mrsd … I often think I wouldn’t be here without you. Thank you for being such a courageous warrior and showing us we can do it! It’s taken 3 attempts over 3 years… 3 months, 6 months and now one whole year! Never going back to that poisonous shit! Thank you for showing us how x

    Thank you @rise2015 x

  • One whole year !! Proud as punch. If you are at the start of your journey get educated
…addiction is a bitch and will throw everything at you. You can do this, do not pick up that drink and making sure their are really appealing alternatives at hand always…

Celebrating with a no alc beer now… really yum! And I only need one πŸ˜‰ what a difference a year makes!!

Keep going strong sober warriors x

I have that habit too! A bit of a rush of adrenalin with the copious (and unnecessary shopping purchases). Thanks for your perspective @Mari135

Thanks for the advice @sharonT you are going so strong! Inspiring. So glad I didnt give into sugar yesterday.

    • I found quitting was sooooo like stopping alcohol. Yes, same neural pathways. The only way I have managed is with high fat /low carb keto eating. What a miracle it is!! Loving it very much and so trimmed down, wow, 21 years feeling bad about the pregnancy weight gained. Almost gone.
14 weeks no sugar. Easy πŸ™‚

  • Kia ora koutou. Day 283, and starting to tackle sugar. It is every bit as challenging! ! It strikes me very similar, definitely as addictive and hard to kick the habit. Have needed it as a prop and think I can move on now that alc doesn’t have the pull that it did. Currently using all my living sober techniques and drowning myself in copious cups of tea – wish me luck! Any tips appreciated… aaarrrgh! , love and strength to all elliecat x

    • Hiya I luckily haven’t turned to sugar, in fact I am feeling like a control freak, first the booze and at the same time not eating as much as I used to and no sugar at all. Actually asked councillor if this was normal but don’t think its obsession yet just something I had noticed.
My daughter came home today and said didn’t you tuck into the leftover chocolate from Halloween, I said NO and she tells me I am weird haha.
I think following the same process as alcohol (and at over 200 days you seem to have that in control) seems like an awesome plan. They do say Sugar is more addictive than cocaine so be gentle on yourself πŸ™‚

    • 283 days!!! Well done!! And oh my…the sugar…yepp….You can do it. It will pass. Like a kidney stone and maybe with several attempts like I needed, but you’ll get the job done. I too found a lot of similarities to becoming sober, and I recently stopped my final bad habit which was shopping too much….similar patterns as in I had to wrangle and wrestle with myself to not give in ….it gets easier over time…..hang in there!! oxoxo

Hey @flourishing welcome back. What a powerful, thoughtful message xox

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 9 months, 3 weeks ago

Top tip: tip it out NOW! Feel your resolve increasing with every glug

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 1 week ago

Oh my goodness @gage my heart goes out to you. My only words of wisdom are that alcohol will not help any life situation. Things will get worse if you continue on this path, it’ll give you a short term fix but certainly mean long term agony. Take it one day, one hour, one minute at a time and do not pick up that first drink. Dial it back further and do not buy it earlier in the day! Make the conscious decision prior to 5pm to feel the temptation with over you and watch it leave again once you don’t act on it.

Also in the early days I made a mental note that once I’d made it to 7pm I’d won for the day. So it was a matter of gritting my teeth for 2 hours.. 5-7pm, distractions, another lovely non alc drink in hand. Pleased to say with 234 days under my belt the thought of buying or drinking is not an issue. I really sense the rewiring in my brain that does not lead me down that path.

As we say in NZ Kia kaha, draw deep and be strong. One step at a time. Stay close here. Elliecat x

  • Woke up without a hangover and smiled. Day 230 and it NEVER gets old. Grateful. Happy weekend, if you’re struggling keep at it, it’s worth every moment! Ellicat x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 2 weeks ago

Stay close here and just do not pick up that drink. And read, get educated. You can do this one day at a time x

  • “You can’t skip chapters, that’s not how life works. You have to read every line, meet every character. You won’t enjoy all of it. Hell, some chapters will make you cry for weeks. You will read things you don’t want to read, you will have moments when you don’t want the pages to end. But you have to keep going. Stories keep the world revolving. Live yours, don’t miss out.”
Ah yes, not sure where this quote is from but doesn’t it ring true, living an alcohol-soaked existence makes us miss out on living a real life? Real connections with those we love, moments of pure joy, true appreciations of sunsets and sunrises, instead we get wasted days filled with pounding heads, shame and regret. Alcohol beckons us with promises of fun, promising so much yet delivering a shadow of that offering. So pleased to be here, day 228, proud and happy, thank you sober tribe I read a lot but I very rarely post. Feeling grateful x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 2 weeks ago

Facing things sober is brave but I’m increasingly thinking it’s also essential to a fulfilling life. Stay strong, elliecat x

Great post! I’m focusing on the same… every day rewiring of my brain and feeling stronger. Can I ask @mamatomany what you mean by PAWS lessening? Stay strong, elliecat x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 2 weeks ago

Big love to you too @loopdaloop from a very contentedly sober Saturday night that happens to also be day 222! Life is bloody good from here I hope it is for you too x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 2 weeks ago

It won’t be like this for the rest of your life. You are resetting your neural pathways. One day at a time for now. Is enough, just do not drink today!

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 3 weeks ago

That is all part of the addiction. It’s easy to think forever is too big. All you need to focus on is today and you win… you also find in time that forever becomes not only not so scary but a real gift. I’ve been where you are, it looked really scary alright… now I just see this as a massive gift to myself. Day 215 here and the future so exciting! One day at a time is all you need to do right now, dont look too far ahead x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 10 months, 4 weeks ago

Congrats on 50 days!! That is awesome. Life can suck but it’ll sure suck a lot more with alcohol added to the mix, don’t you know it πŸ˜‰ Love and strength to you @flourishing xox

Awesome congrats on your 6 months, a huge milestone! I agree life is great with the view from here. Good luck with your sober path if you can do 6 months you can do anything I reckon x

    • Thanks so much @elliecat
Life is much more balanced – I still have the highs and lows, but not as extreme. I feel very lucky to have this second chance at life.

  • 200 days, over $3k saved… so bloody proud! Life is great from here, never going back. Going out with friends tonight, planning my sober evening and what I will drink, sticking to that. I will not drink today! With enormous pleasure. Go all you sober warriors, alcohol is a big fat lie, it brings waaay more misery than joy x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 11 months, 1 week ago

Wonderful post you brave thing. All strength to you 8 days is great hang in there to 10, the next milestone. Make it to 10 you can do 100.. One. Day. At. A. Time if necessary. “I will not drink today”… You can do this! X

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 11 months, 2 weeks ago

I think it helps not to look ahead just take it one day at a time in those early days. “I will not drink today” and cope with what withdrawals throw at you in that moment… it’s hard but totally do-able that way. Thats all I’ve been doing really and now writing from a content day 194. Good luck!

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Totally relate … you will NEVER regret choosing to set this amazing example for your kids! You should be so proud. It is my proudest achievement coming up to 200 days and absolutely no regrets x

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 11 months, 3 weeks ago

You’re so right there… one holiday will always be on the horizon. Do you let that dictate your entire life? Worry less about the holiday and more about your year. In any case you’ll be a different person with a year of alcohol free under your belt! I was worried about my big trip at the end of this year but with close on 200 days now under my belt the prospect looks more enjoyable and fulfilling. Stay strong! You can do this.

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 12 months ago

Wonderful writing thank you for sharing. Loving your analogy of a bike! Will keep that one up my sleeve. Huge congratulations for your long term sobriety you must feel so proud!

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 1 year ago

Welcome @Creeky. Decide what you are going to drink before you get there and get it in your hand quick! Works for me every time.. then focus on the people and not what you are drinking. Good luck you can do this ! X

    • Hey thanks, I will do that. For as long as I remember the main focus on going out or having people over was the drinking, it is what I would look forward to the most, not the company or the good food. I will have to learn to change my focus. Thanks again.

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 1 year ago

Go you! That takes some strength. Suggest you go to the fridge and tip out that bottle of wine and while it’s running down the sink feel your resolve strengthen… you can do this one day at a time simply by not pouring that first drink! Saturday morning here and absolutely no regrets for not drinking last night!! All power to you x

    • Thanks x I’m not ready to tip it down the sink just yet – weirdly I find it helps as it stops me going to the shop on the way home from work – I’m in bed watching crappy tv with a bowl of ice cream – a diet will have to start very soon ha ha xx

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 1 year ago

Keep on with that commitment @flourishing and watch day 9 turn to day 90, day 90 to day 900. One day at a time you have got this! Go you xox

  • elliecat posted a new activity comment 1 year ago

It never gets tiresome rejoicing in the fact you did not drink the night before! Congratulations keep doing this one day at a time, that’s all I’m doing and my counter now says 170. Proud! ! 13 days is just great keep on just the way you are x
