Finally managed day 1 again. I drove my 6+ ton bus from Queenstown to Picton. Left Queenstown at midday arrived Picton at 1.30am. I’ve managed about 2 hours sleep since. There is a bottle of wine in the fridge (warm cause I’m totally off grid) usually I would still drink it, but today there has been no desire. Yee ha. I cross over to Wellington today, first time I’ve taken the bus across the strait. I will find a reason to give the bottle of wine away today I WANT TO STAY SOBER. My divorce should come through soon so goodbye 67kg of shit. Time to see who I am and what I’m capable of by myself and alc free. Hope everyone has a day as good as mine is shaping up to be.

Hi @Ro. Yes I have a full hot shower and the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. The bus is toastie warm. Slept about 4 hours last night so ready to go. The bus is 8.5 m long so it’s a mid size bus fully equiped for permanent living.

  • DavidFS posted a new activity comment 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Hi @Ro, I’m locked in my bus in a Christchurch camping ground, not really sleeping much, just watching crap on tv. I need to start my return trip home tomorrow so I’m hoping I will sleep tonight a bit better. Only plan on Gearldine tomorrow so about 2.5 hours. Stay the night with a couple who are really supportive so that’s ok (no awkward questions). I will make the next plan from there. Like the salad but I would swap the bacon for a sharp crumbled feta, (veg).

    • Can you have a nice hot shower and then hop into bed in your bus that’s not too hot? I hope it’s not so noisy there with other people-that’d fuck me off. I can’t really tolerate earplugs. Anyway I digress. Tomorrow sounds doable. Not too far is good I reckon. It’s a big bus did you say? I’ve never driven a bus. Can’t say as I’d be that keen on it to be honest. How’s the living sober part going for you? Hanging in there? Yes feta would be yum but the parmesan and bacon are so good mmmm

Hi @Itsnowornever, I usually just pass out from too much wine. It usually takes me a few weeks to sleep properly. If anything is worrying me it’s having to drive this 7 ton bus back to Queenstown on no real sleep and a chance of snow in the alpine passes. I will drive till I feel enough is enough and try to sleep in between.

  • DavidFS posted a new activity comment 1 month, 3 weeks ago

5.40am. Slept for 1.5 hrs, but I feel ok. Time for work.

  • DavidFS posted a new activity comment 1 month, 3 weeks ago

    But I’m sober, it’s a long time since I’ve seen 11.40 pm.

  • DavidFS posted an update 1 month, 3 weeks ago

No wine = no sleep and I’ve got a 4am alarm set. Has any one tried “sleep drops”? I feel tired, the bus is 18 degrees inside and 2.5 outside, I luv my diesel heater. I’ve signed up for dry July as an excuse as to why I’m not drinking, I’m currently looking after a business in Christchurch but return to Queenstown some time this week, really not looking forward to that, after splitting up my 20 year marriage there are some very unpleasant memories back there. My X (only referred to as “IT”) spent 6 months telling anybody that would listen how much I was drinking, now I get advice from a lot of customers, so embarrassing. They are customers of my business so I can’t tell them to piss off and mind their own business. Sorry all I’m just rambling cause I’m tired and can’t effing sleep.

    • But I’m sober, it’s a long time since I’ve seen 11.40 pm.

    • Sober is a great place to see things from.
You’ll get through tomorrow and then a good sleep will come and another.
My % of getting through the tough days is 100%. I reckon yours is too.
A few tough days is a small price to pay for true, clear perspective.
Sober is very good. You’ve got dry July for sure.

    • Sober – yes!! The sleep should even out soon. Hang in there. I know it sucks in the early days but you’re doing great.

    • 5.40am. Slept for 1.5 hrs, but I feel ok. Time for work.

    • Lots of people try different things for sleep in early days. I used benadryl but occassionally I would go same as you-1.5 hours sleep. I found I could function pretty good on just a few hours of sober sleep. There was only one day I was so miserable from not sleeping I took the day off. The only way to the other side is through, so hang on and keep trying!

    • Hey @davidfs ah the old small town drunk eh well you know what? Queenstown has the highest mdma usage in the country and it can’t all be loopies doing it, so perhaps some of your customers will be up to all sorts, and not as squeaky clean as they may appear. Next time someone has the audacity to try and give you unsolicited advice, just be polite and tell them thanks you very much but I am already with a therapist. I actually wanted to say something a lot harsher than that, but we’ve only just met. You’ll get used to how I talk soon enough lol. Im in Invers. If you ever get down this way and want to meet for a coffee and a chat…
Sleep sorts itself out. I had terrible insomnia up until a few months ago. When you get back to Qtown and get sorted go see your gp and get some bloods done and a general check up. Can’t hurt. I tried everything there was other than going to a sleep specialist( which I was signed up for). Had a suggestion from here to get my iron checked, was extremely deficient, starting taking supplements and sleeping so much better almost straight away.
Come here often and post all the shit here that you have in your head. It helps so much just getting it out. Also google rational recovery. It helped me a lot. Hope you get through the day ok.

      • Thanks @Ro, think I just need to tough it out and a sleep pattern will return eventually.. I will let you know when I’m in invers next time.

Failed, had a beer with a Friend on Saturday, beer on Sunday and Monday (my day off). I am still motivated I was enjoying the energy and positive attitude sobriety was giving me. My bus was so clean and I was cooking everyday. So here again at day 1.

    • Go you!

    • Can do, start again 😊

    • You know the drill old friend! Great to see you back.

    • Hi @davidfs It isn’t failure, it’s education. There are some things that we can’t take someone else’s word for, we just have to learn them for ourselves first-hand. What did you learn from this experience and how will you avoid falling at this hurdle again? When your head is screaming about how much better a drink will makes things then scream back. It’s a lie and it’s a trap. You are doing this because this is what has to happen. You are doing this because this is how you become well again. When your brain serves up the lies then call them out… that is not where you are going.
“If you do not change direction then you will probably end up where you are headed” (Lao Tzu)

    • You just haven’t decided yet @Davidfs and once you do it will be much easier, the angst of will I or won’t I will disappear because your decision will be not negotiable. That fact will give you strength, and you will just do it, just like me, hehe x

      • Thats the key isnt it @Prudence?—Deciding that this crap booze is not for me–MAKING THE DECISION! Story of my life is not being able to make decisions. Thanks @prudence.x

Thanks @prudence, I always get a park right on the front of the Moeraki holiday park as they only have 2 that will take the bus. Soon I will be 1/2 a metre longer when the new motorbike goes on the back lol.

    • I have a house I rent sometimes on airbnb right in the middel of the bay next door to the pub. I keep going back there and hiring the same house. Great wee place. Enjoy

Hi @DaveH, I understand what you are saying. Currently I still own a business here in Queenstown and live in my bus on a small section out near the airport so I am still as much a part of the community as I want to be. On a couple of my road trips I have felt a bit isolated, but most of my trips are either to go and see friends around the country or to trip down to Moreaki with a group of mates from here. Perhaps we will meet on the road sometime.

Day 5. I have been flirting the edges of sober living (yet again)for a year now and finally I’m here at day 5. Actually got some sleep last night (in saying that, it is only 3.30 in the morning). Life has changed dramatically over the last 18 months, dumped Partner of 20 years, bought a fantastic bus I live on and travel in a lot (Moeraki’s a favourite), but its time to try life sober again. Hope everybody here is winning, I know giving up is just the beginning.

    • Hi @davidfs, This is day 4 for me. Of course, I flirted with this notion of quitting for a very long time too. I could wish that I stuck to it years ago, but that won’t help. So, here we are~walking on this journey now. No turning back, just moving forward, knowing that this is what we must do to save our lives. We’ve got this! Keep on keeping on!

      • Thank you @buckeyeone. I gave up several times in the past but didn’t stick to it. I think I have a better understanding of ME this time and I hope that will help.

    • Yay, congrats on day 5!

    • Welcome to your new relationship!!! As you know alcohol thinks she hasn’t done with you yet and is going to try to win you back. Don’t be fooled! Sober life is bloody awesome.

    • Good to see you back here @Davidfs and yes Moeraki is one of my favourite places in the whole world. Go well. xx

      • Thanks @prudence, I always get a park right on the front of the Moeraki holiday park as they only have 2 that will take the bus. Soon I will be 1/2 a metre longer when the new motorbike goes on the back lol.

      • No @Davidfs you get to it from up behind. If you were looking up from the road it has a nice roundish lawn near the road where you could pitch tents then up some steps to decks and house. Its got really leary aztec type carpet but otherwise a great place

    • Hi @davidfs I also live in my motorhome after 20+ years of marriage. I’m currently up in Golden Bay visiting my son but will be back south in a week or so. It is a wonderful life but can I caution you about something? In recovery we need to stay in contact with others on the same path. We need to be part of a community, and while being able to go wherever we like can be wonderful we can also easily become isolated. This forum is a great way to stay connected, so don’t be shy about using it… that’s why it’s here and peoples engagement in it is what makes it successful. Day 5 is brilliant. Keep doing what’s working.

Decided I better look around, another empty wine bottle in my parts shelves, I’m sure one of my machines must have needed a whine now and then. Two full cans of extra strong Elephant beer in the back of my filing cabinet, how original, will give them to one of the staff this morning.

  • Day 17, it’s been quite easy so far as I’m up early, we eat dinner almost as soon as we get home and go to bed early. The cold weather helps. But tonight two Friends want us to go out for dinner, first social event since I stopped drinking this time. No pressure from Friends as they will just accept I’m not drinking without much comment. It will be more interesting to see how I feel about not having a wine when the others are. Pattner NEVER drinks so that’s a help.

    • My partner doesn’t drink either.. well seldom. It does help. I hope you have a great night out tonight.

    • Congrats on day 17. You’ll do great at your dinner. No pressure helps a lot. Those are the kind of friends to have.

    • Dinner will be fine, by the sounds of it. Just be ready to order your AF drink and to listen to and enjoy your friends.

    • For me, the moment the waiter comes and asks is tricky.
Usually once everyone is settled, the others took some sips of their wine, I calm down inside.
But that first 15-20 min. period can be tricky territory.

What is amazing about choosing the sober-night is that those 15-20 min. of possible tension/irritability/ambivalence/debating with yourself whether or not “just one would be ok” are worth saying “No!”.

Because instead of maybe 1-2 hours of drunk babble talk and hangovers and relationship tension and body poisoning and shame shame shame, …you get a fresh sober morning tomorrow, after a solid night of healthy sober sleep.

Hi @tnt8030, yup you sure can tell it’s a problem when the empties start turning up in the wierdest places. Last week I went to get an engineer some safety glasses from my workshop, I opened a toolbox and low and behold 1/2 a bottle of wine?

Hi @Begoodtomyself, they sure have been there at least 17 days. Perhaps I better look around tomorrow, just to be sure. Have a good weekend.

  • An opps moment, when you open the high cupboard in the kitchen to put a plastic container up there, and staring you in the face are 2 empty wine bottles you had forgotten about, and wouldn’t you know it Partner was standing right beside. Lost some brownie points I think..

    • Ah well, they were from earlier times? Don’t let them distract from your good work now 🙂

    • Yeah he probably knew they were there anyway. I’m pretty sure you two spending some sober time together on a friday night will make up some brownie points though 🙂

    • Thanks @Frog, I can honestly say I’m feeling really good about where I am right now.

    • @DavidFS I found empty beer cans I hid all the time. Found a couple empty beer bottles in my golf bag that I keep in the garage. Good reminder of why I can’t moderate!

  • I can’t seem to stay awake at night, we have dinner and by 8pm I’m yawning, by 8.30pm, I’m in bed with my book and the TV on. I don’t read more than a page or watch 1/2 a program before I’m asleep.i love it, means I’m awake at 4am, but I get to watch recorded TV, read my book and eat my porridge before I need to get ready for work.. it’s so rewarding being sober.
