It’s ok 🤗 how could you have known. I’m going to try and make better use of the support page so we don’t dilute the value of the main feed with techie posts

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 days, 3 hours ago

Hey @AprilsFool I am pulling everything across to the site support page here https://livingsober.org.nz/site-support/read-more-button-not-working-as-expected/ – thanks for letting me know. Once I have a fix ill post something in the main feed, but will discuss stuff in the support page

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 days, 6 hours ago

Hey there, thanks for reaching out – I am gathering all the information about the read more issue here: https://livingsober.org.nz/site-support/read-more-button-not-working-as-expected/
As I have disabled the animations you should have less of the scroll to white page issue.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 days, 8 hours ago

@getclear I have started a thread in the support page for this: https://livingsober.org.nz/site-support/read-more-button-not-working-as-expected/ Information is getting lost in the thread. Can you go here and add some details about the device your using – thx

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 days, 10 hours ago

We are constantly trying to improve the speed of the site. I doubt it’s your computer.
When you say searches for mentions – you mean you own? https://livingsober.org.nz/members/morgan/activity/mentions/ Or others?

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 days, 13 hours ago

ugggh thats so frustrating. I have tweaked some things now, including turning off the scroll animation and making the post button always visible. I have also cleared all our caches and reset the ssl certificate. Lastly I have reached out to the theme developers asking for a solution where we don’t need the “read more” button – just load all the content the first time. Some people do write long posts, but its not really an issue, you can just scroll over them – Ill put any further updates or info in this ticket https://livingsober.org.nz/site-support/read-more-button-not-working-as-expected/ if you want to add anything to the ticket, just leave a comment.
Hopefully today is better then yesterday.

I think this has been resolved 🙂

    • I’m
Nope still have no post button on iPad did notice that up top on the address bar it says unsecure in red. Have a post button on my iPhone but when I went to comment on @tipsytoegal for some reason on my iPhone it went to her profile page rather than staying in members feed area.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 1 week, 4 days ago

    @kit 🙂

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks ago

At the top of the feed there are 4 buttons. You probably have Following or Favorites selected. Just click back on All Members http://www.clipular.com/posts/5673846880075776?k=QdKn9ROgM_3Zi9lwGtnG1UFi3ic

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks ago

@jesss 🤦‍♀️ Oh no I totally gas lit you! I originally wrote (@)Jess with two ss not three and then went and edited it after. Which obviously doesn’t resend the notification. Soz 🙏
But on the upside that’s validation follow notifications are not firing 😁

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks ago

@jesss @rise2015 Hmm notifications you should be turned off as of yesterday late afternoon. They were on up until then so you may have left over notifications from earlier. I just followed you – did you get a notification?

@tipsytoegal you may be viewing a cached version of the site. I just went and looked at your and my profile and can’t see anything. You can check this by clearing your browser cache, regardless I’ll keep an eye on this ?

    • @danthedev i did not get a notification u followed me. I also did not get a notification u put @ in front of my name😱. I got rise2015 notification before though…

Another dev side note: I have increased the number of posts per page to 50. This should result in far fewer needs to click the dreaded “load more button”.

Ok I need to legitimately test that I have disabled youtube embeds. So heres a video encapsulating the developer experience #DevOnBrand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nua3Cjdik0

haha oh no anything but favourites – favourites already exists in the system. Its the star just under a persons image (I need to move it and make it bigger). Unfortunately it will be to much work to repurpose the word through the codebase. Soz!

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 1 day ago

thanks for everything you do @mrs-d 🙏🏼

    • Thanks to both of you for all you do. This sounds like a great idea. I reckon you should call it Favourites.

Incidentally I have implemented our first follow feature. So if you go to those members pages and follow them and then come back to this feed – you can click “following” at the top left of the feed (just under the comment box. This will filter the feed to posts by the members you follow. We are still ironing out the user experience of this – so haven’t done a big announcement of it. But there is nothing stopping you starting to use it and follow these members 🙂

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 4 days ago

@morgan Yes and no – I have done a bunch of things to improve the various cache and content delivery network settings. I have also just added a REST cache which I am hoping will speed up loading the members feed page.

@prudence Oh that really sucks that your tablet still isn’t working. Unfortunately its an isolated case. However Once I have made some general improvements I’ll come back to it and look into it again. Do you have a ticket in the support section? or was it something you reported before we had that? It would be good to have it there so we don’t loose this kind of info in the members feed over time.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 5 days ago

Hey @k1w1 thanks I am aware of that pain. Unfortunately wats happening there is that the site is paginating via making a request of the server for more data. So it’s not so much seeing the rest of the page as seeing the next page. I have a couple of fixes for this that I am looking at implementing. Once I have sorted out the emerald speed issue i’ll see about improving this.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 5 days ago

Thanks for the info. Login sessions and page view permissions are in the same realm as logged in page speed. So that bodes well for finding the weak link in the system and removing/replacing it.

It’s been a slow cat and mouse game of finding things to tweak and cache. He really bad error that made pages take 30s to load has been resolved and our server has been allocated maximum resource and the server side cache has been tuned to be as aggressive as possible bt the hosting team at flywheel.

Where we are at now is that the logged out viewers of the site have had a good speed bump. We are now scoring 74/100 for desktop on google page speed test – which is pretty good for a WordPress site with lots of images. But the logged in viewers still suffer having at least 4s extra in server side rendering. The good news is this gives me a direction to keep investigating.

I will keep making tweeks – I’m really hoping I find the one thing that is th ball and chain on these loads and that removing it provides a big win.

One thing to now is that the members feed uses the WordPress api to update posts and comments on the fly (when it’s working well) – so you don’t need to reload as often. Eg when you post the page doesn’t need to refresh – the post just appears in the thread.

A typical reaction to degraded site performance is to refresh the page more often – I think it provides people with a sense of “if that didn’t work – nothing will”. For this site I think this dynamic load has been working relatively reliably for a while – so if you do find yourself refreshing a lot, I can suggest refreshing less see how that feels.

I’ll keep on chasing this mouse

    • Thank you so much for keeping us in the loop. I do find I need to log out then back in or the site behaves weirdly, cant reply etc. But logged out I can still see all the posts …??!!

    • @Danthedev the read more button does my head in, its really slow to open the rest of the page so you can read more lol

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Hey @shez thanks for pinging me. This may have resulted from all the changes we made to the cache in the last 72 hours – I have reset it multiple times during this time. If this still persists in the next few days ill sort it out 🙂

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Site should be running faster now everyone. Still not sub 1 secondly load times like I’d like to see. But we shave got as much as we. An outlet of the cache and location. I am now optimising the database and then moving onto coordinating a better front end cache with the theme developers.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Hey there, that would be me. Unfortunately the old site had its issues and this has been a journey of updating to a theme that we can constantly update as well as bringing other elements up to date. Unfortunately the site cache proves to be an issue. It should be a bit better now – we are working on a much better fix atm to bring the speed way down. Thanks for you patience

    • Unfortunately the new site is not friendly to my samsung tablet and takes me more than twice as long to make a post. That is mainly why I am not here so much anymore. It will be great when the cache issue is sorted. Thanks Dan

      • Oh sorry, just read the posts further down the feed.

      • We need to hear about Europe from your writerly observant eyes @prudence!!!! Bother the samsung – the iPad has always been normal despite it being a geriatric in the tech world … It is slowish now when hitting post though – and this is 6 hours later @DanThe Dev… thanks for all the work 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Hey friends, very sorry about the lagging said. Its effecting different people to different degrees.

We just moved the site from a USA server to a Aus server (still with Flywheel).

Ironically and disappointingly this was done under advisement from their team that it would make the site faster.

I have escalated this with their performance team and put as much pressure as I can on them to get this sorted.

I hope to have this resolved soon. I am so terribly sorry about this! This hopefully will be the last big performance fix and we will be stable and fast hence forward.

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Hi Juliana – unfortunately we had a hiccup overnight with an upgrade that made our ssl certificate invalid this morning. The good news is it was a one off – LivingSober should now be a little faster going forward 🙂

    • Thanks for letting me know. It happened just as I tried something tech wise I hadn’t tried before and that made me think I caused it!

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 1 month, 1 week ago

Yes of course! so it would be a case of adding that to the members activity feed – eg @jr is https://livingsober.org.nz/members/jr/ and we would just need to add it as an option at the top. Yes that will be easier then working out how to extend the search function. Thanks 🙏🏼

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 1 month, 1 week ago

Great question @jr – thats a great idea. Without installing more plugins we don’t have this functionality. However I think it is totally possible to add. A quick look around returns https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-global-search/ which looks promising. I will add it to our dev board 🙂

Update: there was a missing image file for one persons avatar that was causing errors. I think this may have been the problem. @skylar can you confirm please. Incidentally this means it was not related to your accounts. I can delete one if you’d like? though I think it would be better to just go back to using the original and changing the display name of this new one to skylar so its not confusing.

OMG @mrs-d I just misclicked and deleted your comment! 🤦 heres what you wrote:
@danthedev .. I agree that members shouldn’t be able to change their
nickname, as it then won’t match their username and their
notifications won’t work. However this problem being experienced by
@jocord is with her origianl account that has the same username and
nickname – both are jocord. The email address is the @aol.com one.
The new account she set up has the username @skylar but she has
changed her nickname to @jocord .. this has a @yahoo.com email and is
    working fine…
    So I don’t think it’s the mis-matching username/nickname that is
causing the problem. Or maybe I’m wrong. The login details I sent you
were for the original account with the matching username/nickname..
you saw that was the account that was experiencing the blank pages
    right?”

    • interesting. I think It may have something to do with the image. I will need to confirm.

Hi @skylar I have the email from Mrs D and logged into your account and seen the error. Very strange. I think the code that is copying the username to the public name is really brittle and bad.

@mrs-d I am now thinking we should just turn this off. Its too inconsistent and we are basically trying to fight the way wordpress and buddypress are setup to work. We could always put something in the community guideline about the names – ie the difference between them. Thoughts?

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months ago

    @01oceanbreeze ok great – thanks

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months ago

@01oceanbreeze Ah ok – yeah it really is gone! That sucks. It seems that editing is a bit unreliable atm. For now I would recommend copying your text into an offline note so if it doesn’t post you don’t loose it. I have logged the details of this into our dev board. Sorry about that 🙁

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months ago

@limetwiste ah I know what that is. What is happening is that we have a hidden field that we copy your username into so that your username and display name are the same. Unfortunately the javascript that was written sometimes doesn’t work on all devices. Can you confirm what device you are on? Also if you haven’t given it a go; try editing it in Chrome on a laptop/desktop if possible. I will log this as bug on our dev board and see if I can fix it.

    • Thanks @DanTheDev Macbook using Firefox. Tried in Chrome and the same error comes up.

Hey @01oceanbreeze I’m trying to work out what is happening. The ongoing missing posts bug has not been one thing but a series of things. I just pinged you on a couple of posts I found in your activity feed https://livingsober.org.nz/members/01oceanbreeze/ if not do you remember any identifying features of your posts? when the post was published, who it was a reply to or what the comment was about?

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months ago

    Or this one @01oceanbreeze ?

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months ago

@01Oceanbreeze its not this one that you edited is it and lost?

    • @danthedev. No I think that one is still there. It was about a phone call I had with my sister – I posted it at 9am this morning which was eight hours ago. In the post I relayed the conversation – it was about her trying to convince me to drink at Christmas 😀

Hey @prudence hmm I dont have a samsung tablet to test on – i will have to find one. I think I know what you are talking about. The notification bell user experience i would have designed if i had built the feature from scratch (it is an out of the box one). Basically how I have used it is to go and read the things and then click back on it and “mark all as read” when I am done – give that a go. Its less fiddly. Regarding finding the right post it should have a link to the post or all be there in the actiivity feed. I ‘ll note this in our dev board and check the user flow of this and make sure its obvious

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months, 3 weeks ago

    what about this one @mrs-d

  • DanTheDev posted a new activity comment 6 months, 3 weeks ago

@mrs-d im just triggering an email – do you get this?

  • Hello everyone, as many of you know I have been fixing a variety of things since launching based upon unforeseen gotchas and feedback from the community. This included:

    • fixing the live notification bell in the top right
    • fixing email notifications – we send 10s of thousands a month
    • small color changes to increase contrast and findability of things
    • login and logout routing issues and page lockouts for non members

Today I @mrs-d flagged an issue with me that I thought I had already solved – and i had. I suspect whats happening is that some of the improvements I have made are not coming onto your machine due to your browsers chaching css (how the site looks) and js (special site functions) resources. This is normal as it gives you faster experience as your computer does not need to fetch as much from the server.

    Action to take
You should be able to tell your browser to hard refresh the page reloading all it assets by following this instruction:

Most Windows desktop browsers utilize the keyboard combination Ctrl + F5 to force a page specific cache refresh. Mac OS X based browsers tend to use Command + R.

fingers crossed this will resolve some of the ghost issues.

    • Thanks so much!!!

    • Thanks Dan. I mainly use my samsung tablet or my samsung7 phone. I am having a few wee problems but I think that might be because I am technically a bit thick! What seems obvious to some (youth!) is not to me!! It seems that when I get comments on a post or a mention for any other reason it comes up as a notification on the wee bell at the top right. So I hit that, then have to individually go into each comment to read it. I can’t seem to bring up the actual post I made and see all the comments listed under it…..well sometimes I can by accident but…. Oh crikey! Who’d have an old person!!!

By deciding to upgrade EVERYTHING in this project we unintentionally got emojis working. Ie it was never a task on my dev board.

This was kind of the point of upgrading everything – we didn’t even know what we were missing out on. Turns out it was emoji support 🤦‍♀️😈🤩😇

For anyone wandering where everyone is at I’d like to explain that as a result of changing server we have had to broadcast out a message through the internet telling your computer/device the new address for livingsober.org.nz. Consequently some of you may already be here, others may still be seeing the very bright maintenance page I put up on the old server.

So not to worry everyone will be here soon – including @mrs-d 🙂
