It passed, I am sooooo close to vacation. I am really ready to get away to the mountains,

Thanks! I made it through, climbing this weekend and all next week and I cannot wait!

  • 25 days, I’m not really craving but I do seem a bit agitated. It’s almost like I cannot relax. Meditation, maybe some yoga, I’ll get there.

A mental or confidence reset perhaps but don’t underestimate the good you have done for your body and soul in that 223 days. That is still there, it is still a huge accomplishment.

Right there with you, day 22 here. I like the Heineken Zero, not as much of a funky taste as some.

Thanks for the reply, sorry to hear you’ve dealt with the same. Yep on Karma. Tomorrow I’m going to trek several miles into the mountains to this secluded meadow and let the stress of today be washed away.

Impressive and success creates that positive inertia. These wins help us create a new baseline for what we know we can handle without alcohol.

  • As a person that understands the struggles with addiction I am trying really hard to be understanding. Someone broke into my car last night, they smashed the back glass and stole one of my backpacks, I imagine they are looking to trade for drugs. The pack was a fairly expensive Gregory framed pack that had some gear in it. Fortunately they left behind my crampons, ice axe and mountaineering boots. Again, I get addiction makes people do super stupid shit but I am pissed.

    • So sorry to hear Cascade, some people can be such swine. I went to a Sunday market once in my newish car, got back to car and the car radio was pinched. It wasn’t even a good one. I think the CD that was in it was worth more haha! But bloody annoying! Long drive home in silence😔 Karma has a way🎋

  • Three weeks today and I am feeling pretty darn good. Wife and I went for pizza last night, I chose to eat in the bar area because I don’t like being around children and I handled the bar scene just fine. Busy weekend ahead, today I’m helping my wife get ready for an art showing and tomorrow I’ll be in the mountains with our daughter. Too busy to be slowed down by alcohol. I hope everyone is well.

A quick check in, Day 19. Long commute yesterday made me pretty edgy, I wanted a drink but resisted. This was the first strong craving I’ve had for a while, I guess the tired or hungry, etc. thing is very true. Today is one day closer to the weekend and I’m excited about a trip to the mountains. Hiking and climbing is how my well gets filled back up, these experiences reinforce what a gift an AF life is and make days like yesterday easier.

    • Well done fighting through that craving – HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) is very true for me too! Have a great trip to the mountains, that sounds amazing! xo

@leslielily I would really like to visit Japan, the booze scene sounds intense though. As for the snow when you visited, I got the t-shirt from that! It says “I survived the great Seattle Snowpocalypse”. It’s a great place except it just took me 2 hours to drive 17 miles…

    • My husband had to drive me to the airport One of the nights that it was heavily snowing – it was the scariest ride of either of our lives, and that’s saying a lot. We have both driven through many a blizzard here in Maine, but damn those Seattle roads were slick!!! We were both terrified!!! I wish I knew about the shirts, what a keepsake that would have been!

Kinda sad really, I’ve lived so close to the border with BC for years and I have never crossed over. But that’s changing.

How pervasive is the drinking culture in Japan? I live in Seattle and it is a huge part of society.

    • It’s a very big part of society in a lot of different ways. In work culture, it is expected that you will go to drinks after work with clients or partners, and you are looked down on if you do not participate (this doesn’t effect me as I’m working remotely for my job in America, luckily). Also, there is just booze EVERYWHERE. Bars all over the place, beer offered at any eatery, huge liquor stores where they seriously sell liquor by the BARREL (not even legal in the US, haha), and advertisements in your face 24/7. All of the above has not made it easy. There is a liquor store the size of a grocery store three minutes from my house. I haven’t been to it since I committed to going AF but I have to walk by it every single day. On another note – I LOVE Seattle and I want to move there! I’m from Maine, but I stayed in Seattle for a week last year when my husband was traveling there for work and the second I got off the plane I fell in love, and I have felt it was where I was meant to be ever since. And this was during that insane snow storm you guys had – more snow then you’d had in 70 years?? I was there for that! (Ironic since I am from Maine, and it seemed totally normal to me, haha!) It was the best travel I have ever been on. <3

    Well done! We are winning!

  • Hello all, day 17 here. Doing pretty good overall though I was a bit angsty yesterday. My family has beed super supportive, I don’t think there’s any booze in the house. I go on holiday in about 10 days and will be off work for 3 weeks with AF travels into the mountains and a trip to British Columbia. I was nervous at first about this because of the temptations of being away but I ready to travel and be free. I think I’ll schedule a message and use the money I’ve saved by not buying booze, that sounds nice.

    • Traveling and a change of scenery may help. I was sober for a couple weeks when I first came out to Japan just because there was so much going on and so much to get done. It was when we got settled in and comfortable (and I found the liquor store) that my problems came right back.

    • Very fortunate to have the supportive family. Mine has been too. Everything is better without booze, and that includes traveling! B.C, I’m jealous!

      • Kinda sad really, I’ve lived so close to the border with BC for years and I have never crossed over. But that’s changing.

    • Well done! Sober travels are great. You’ll have more time and more money to explore. You’ll never regret not drinking when you awake fresh in the morning!

Thank you @enzedgirl! We are really looking forward to the trip and I will stay strong. My plan is to be super choosey on dinner locations and focus on being outside in places like Butchart Gardens and the harbour.

  • Kind of scared. I booked a trip for Mrs. Climber and I to Victoria BC in August. Going on holiday and not drinking will be new territory for me. I’ve talked to her and she is super supportive and she will not drink either on the trip. That’s a relief but it’s still a tad scary. I really do not want to fail.

    • You can do it cascadeclimber 🙂

Also you’ve got some time up your sleeve to think thru the potential triggers and pitfalls, and plan plan plan to enjoy the hell out of this holiday and stay alcohol free 😊👍🏼😊👍🏼😊👍🏼

Very cool, that’s a beautiful area! For me, mountains are the ultimate cleanser.

    • Mountains are that for me, too. I hadn’t thought to celebrate with awesome climbs and hikes. Coincidentally my 30 days will be a few days before my husband and I happen to have a 14er hike planned. Thanks for helping me perceive it as a celebration, too! Have a great rest of your holiday weekend.

Congrats! That warm blanket of self control feels pretty damn good.

  • I did my two week AF celebration today with a climb of a peak in the Olympic Mountains. I wasn’t the fastest by I summited, something that would not happen if I had the slightest shadow of alcohol in my system. Encountered four super fuzzy mountain goats and I took some time to play in the snow before starting my descent. I made my profile cover photo that last image I took before heading down.

    • Congrats! Amazing 🙂

    • That’s my kind of celebration! Congrats on two weeks! My husband and I are taking our kids for our first family backpacking trip tomorrow up near Breckenridge. Hoping to see some mountain goats, too! 😊

I have the million dollar mouth so I loathe the dentist. If it’s something big like a crown or root canal I team up with Prince Valium, no weirdness the next day.

I’m planning to climb a peak in the Olympic Mountains. It’s a really difficult hike that my body would reject if it has any shadow of alcohol in it but now I’m free. My plan is a nice long solo ascent, just myself with my thoughts, the meadows, rock and mountain goats. The view from the summit perched about 6000ft above the valley floor is dizzying.

  • CascadeClimber posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 1 day ago

You’re do amazing! The greatest gift I ever gave myself is my fitness and I let alcohol harm that, never again.

  • This weekend is two weeks, planning a little celebration.

    • Well done on 2 weeks, enjoy your celebration x

Well done, it hit me a bit today as well. That HALT thing makes sense and helps bring some clarity, tomorrow will be brighter.

  • Pretty crummy weather outside, I’m lacking the motivation to run in the rain. Sucks because my time in the woods is how I cope with not going to the bar for happy hour. But it’s day 10 and I won’t let it get me but I’d be untruthful if I said I’m not feeling the urge. If we go to dinner, tonight will definitely be one of those nights where we will choose our destination carefully.

    • Running is how I get through, but hurt my back at the mo and can’t so know just how you feel, hang in there

  • CascadeClimber posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 1 day ago

Thats tough, at least seeing someone stumbling around can be motivation to stay sober.

  • Got stuck in some serious traffic on the way home today from work, thoughts of a cold beer were drifting around my melon but I kicked them out. Instead I dropped my wife at the beach so she could read her book while I ran the trails on the cliffs overlooking the sea. It was my cleansing moment and today I feel like I needed more than yesterday.

    • It’s great you got out for your run.

    • I am not jealous of the beach I am not jealous of the beach I am not….
Lol. In all seriousness….WELL DONE on choosing that trail run over beers. Your cells smiled as they got all that extra oxygen and the post-run high is such a natural awesome experience. Go you!

    • Good on u for pushing through. You will feel SO good for not drinking… we never regret That!

  • It was a good but exhausting day at Pride in Seattle, lots of walking and lots of memories of some of my favorite bars. It got to me a couple times, that uncomfortable mix of craving and feeling of loss. But the anxiety passed and I survived day 8.

  • CascadeClimber posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 3 days ago

I am so sorry for your loss and I wish I had a good answer. I really hope you are seeking support beyond this website.

  • CascadeClimber posted a new activity comment 2 weeks, 4 days ago

No easy answers but I had a pretty open discussion with my family that there are events and places that will be off limits at times. Addiction is weird, and they need to know that while going to a particular place yesterday was fine, today it’s not and the day after tomorrow I could go there and never even think about ordering a drink. The forever thing is too big and too abstract for me to think about right now. But my dad and both of my grand fathers did it so I’m pretty sure I can do it. I’m staying focused on the positives of weight loss, healthier living, far better fitness. Alcohol is a poison. Today the wife and I will be at Pride in Seattle were craft beer and craft cocktails flow like water but today I feel strong and it will not get in my head.

    • “Forever”…I call it the f word, as many don’t like to hear it. See, you are thinking about it, and handling it well…pushing it out of your head when it gets scary. There are some positive things about embracing the f word though. It allows you to focus on coping, and it ends the daily decision struggle. But it is an uncomfortable word, I’m smiling at myself as I type this…and yet, that’s what we hope to achieve by being here. So tuck it away in the back of your mind until you feel a little stronger, but pull it out and try it on once in a while. It can feel really good, too, to say that I’m free of that crap forever.

Good morning and congrats on two weeks! Early riser too but that was with or without alcohol but one thing for sure my sleep is so much better AF. It’s day 8 for me and the wife and I are headed to Pride in Seattle, same as you there will be loads of opportunities for booze but I didn’t drink yesterday and I will not drink today. Have a great day.

    • Good on you and enjoy! I am normally an early riser, I las if I’ve wasted my day if I wake at 6! Lol But, 4, is a bit early for even me and am hoping it subsides.

  • Rocking some endorphins after a 20km hike with my daughter in the mountains today, no need for booze when your body is cranking out the happy chemicals. Just being off alcohol for a week has made a difference is how strong I was climbing. Even on the steep stuff my heart rate rarely got above 143. I’m getting there, I feel my mountain mojo returning.

  • Full AF weekend planned, long trek into the mountains tomorrow and Seattle Pride on Sunday. A no booze bonus- I’m sleeping like a rock now, that alone has been a godsend.
