Hello, Lee@, from Mobile, AL. Didn’t realize you were right down the road. I had a stumble too, over July 4th weekend when I was visiting friends in Texas. But I had made it further than ever before (33 days), so I am just subtracting those days from my total and carrying on! So Day 42 for me, and best wishes to you, my Gulf Coast neighbor.

    • Hi @bridgette, suppose I could have just subtracted a day but that seems to mess with my head to much. I’m not a numbers person and besides, each sober day is worth celebrating. I’m just glad this week is over but you know we are not out of the woods until late Sept.

Something shifted for me around day 24, and I stopped feeling the cravings…you will get there too.

  • Bridgett posted a new activity comment 1 month, 3 weeks ago

That was me too–desperate for wine before dinner, but fine afterwards… Crazy. : ) I now have cranberry juice with sugar-free tonic water and a lime while I fix dinner, and the Wine Witch is silent. Hang in there! You’ve got this!

Welcome, @darkblue! You will find a lot of support here.

  • I had not gone more than a single day without a drink (several drinks…) for many years, but yesterday I reached my goal of 30 days sober. The book “The 30-Day Sobriety Solution: How to Cut Back or Quit Drinking in the Privacy of Your Own Home” has been a huge help to me, as has this website! Thank you all so much, and keep fighting the good fight. Day 31 and counting!

  • Day 26 and I am plugging along, feeling great, pretty much over any withdrawal symptoms, and blessedly free of cravings. Hope everyone here is doing well or at least will be soon!

Rose lemonade sounds wonderful! Good for you on day 4!

That’s a big win, I think, to taste a drink and then put it away! Well done, and now you are that much stronger.

Mocktails at what used to be wine time have absolutely saved my life! Get through the first bit, and the new healthy habits will kick in!

You can absolutely do this! Urge-surfing helped me a lot; I learned that if I could get through the wine witching hour that I was fine, and the sober days are stacking up for me now and it keeps getting easier. Google urge-surfing and see if it might work for you. Good luck!!!

    • Thanks Bridgett I will, my problem is at home, out and about if I am driving I am fine but sitting at home in front of the tv is worse

I’ve just been scrolling through the messages on this wonderful site…what a great place with so many great people. Thank you all and happy weekend! (Day 21 for me.)

@Iowadawn, I am still so new to this (Day 19) that I don’t really feel like I have any business offering advice, but I do have some thoughts. How about celebrating the good sober time you’ve had so far and know that you have learned from it, even if you stumbled this time? If you’ve done long sober stretches before, then you can do them again! And the day count can become sort of tyrannical, I think, when you get up into those higher numbers and then “have” to start over all the way back at Day 1, especially when you know so much more now than you did at your first Day 1. Maybe think that in the past 654 days, you’ve only made one or two mistakes? That’s an incredible record! Best wishes to you for the surgery and for continued sober success.

@Seizethe day, THANK YOU. I am making “Hang tight my dear” my new mantra.

Haha! Don’t think I’ll be taking that (pot) up right now (or ever)… But a nice POTTED plant sounds great. : )

Thank you all so much. It is humbling to begin to realize how much abuse I have put my body through and how it is struggling to recover and repair right now. I appreciate your encouragement more than I can say. (Another recent symptom: weepiness! But the good kind.) Thank you, thank you.

Question for the long-timers, or at least anyone farther along than me! I’m on Day 18 and tired and headachey and my face is breaking out like I’m a teenager again. (I am 54.) Anyone else go through this?

    • Yep, just think of all the junk being cleared out of your cells! You’re body is going through a major change and you’ll go up and down with exhaustion and energetic days. For awhile I had cold sores every 2 weeks. Then I noticed bright eyes, and a definite crease in which to put the darker shade of eye shadow!, whiter teeth, a more chiseled face, no double chin, the list goes on and on!

    • Hi @bridgett – you are right on track. My headaches lasted for about 2 – 3 weeks and the sleeping extraordinary amounts for about 50 days. I was so sleep deprived when I was drinking my body was soaking it up. I also remember I had a breakout on my back the first couple of weeks. Don’t worry, it gets better! Waaayyy better!! Xo

    • Hang tight my dear. You’re in the thick of it. I remember the first 6 weeks I felt utterly exhausted, dinners were toasted sandwiches or nearly non existent, (I had always used alcohol to energise my way through the end of each day), and my sleep was terrible. I felt hardly able to function. And my skin didn’t turn into a healthy glow at all!
Right now your aim is to eat as healthy as you can, stay hydrated, and hit the pillow sober at the end of each day.
And reward yourself, a new pot plant, a new tea cup, handbag etc. Things that last and don’t get pissed away.
You’re doing fantastic. I promise it will get better as time goes by.
      Give time, time.
      Big hugs xo

      • What do you propose she do with the new pot plant?😉

        • Haha! Don’t think I’ll be taking that (pot) up right now (or ever)… But a nice POTTED plant sounds great. : )

      • @Seizethe day, THANK YOU. I am making “Hang tight my dear” my new mantra.

    • yep I remember getting pimples.. and being tired and headachy.. your body is detoxing.. it’s fabulous! but also hard work, these early weeks. Like the others have said, keep going..! You’ll be SO THANKFUL to yourself in the months and years ahead for doing this hard work now. I am in awe of the me who went through the early stages of quitting 7 and a half years ago. She was a legend! And so are you x

      • Thank you all so much. It is humbling to begin to realize how much abuse I have put my body through and how it is struggling to recover and repair right now. I appreciate your encouragement more than I can say. (Another recent symptom: weepiness! But the good kind.) Thank you, thank you.

I am writing down “I never regret not drinking” to pull out when I feel tempted. Thank you, @newstart100. And what a wonderful weekend you made for yourself!

I loved “Blackout,” and will try “Unwasted” soon, thank you! I agree, reading helps SO much. Also recommend “Drinking: A Love Story” by Caroline Knapp. I read it years ago, but might try it again, now that I am actually doing this…

  • I finished a great book last night, “The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober” by Catherine Gray. Highly recommend! Starting on “This Naked Mind” by Annie Grace next. Lucky Day 13 for me today. : )

    • You will enjoy “this naked mind” it taught me a lot.

    • Reading “getting sober books” was a big help to me early on. I’m not normally a frequent book reader, but it kept me busy in the evenings and kept my head turned in the right direction. Two of my favorites were “Blackout” by Sarah Hepola, and “Unwasted: My Lush Sobriety” by Sacha Scoblic. They share their dark stories, and then their escape from alcoholism.

Every time you are tempted and manage to resist, you strengthen your resistance muscle! Good for you!

  • I thought I was going to have an easy long weekend with non-drinking people, but it was actually really hard! My sister and brother-in-law were around on Friday and Saturday, and they are big drinkers. Then I was left with my mom and my cousin, both of whom are non-drinkers, but we had a big family fight over politics! (I live in the state of Alabama in the U.S. and was visiting in Florida. ‘Nuff said.) I didn’t drink and I wasn’t tempted to drink, but the experience made me realize how often and for how long I have used drinking as a CRUTCH. I am going to choose where and with whom I spend my time very carefully now so that I don’t ever depend on alcohol like that again. I came home a day early and was so relieved to be home and still sober. I thought of you all here and what I would tell you about this weekend, so there it is. : )

    • Socialising is the hardest part to think about getting though. I come from a big family of drinkers, never struggled with it until the last 5 years. It is awesome being able to come on here and get that almost instance support. You’re amazing for gettin through that tough episode and still sober. Thank you for inspiring me xx

    • My mother said never discuss politics or religion at the dinner table 🙂 With both each party thinks they have the right answer lol. Well done on looking after yourself and protecting your sobriety

  • I’m on Day 6, which I haven’t managed in years because, you know, the weekend. But I am going away for this weekend with NON-DRINKERS and will easily rack up a few more days. Looking forward to double digits!

    • Well done on 6 days Bridgett! Double digits are just around the corner 🙂

    • You will be amazed how easy it is to get through the weekend and then you know it can be done. Have fun with your non drinking buddies and hey, you get to remember everything. 😀

    • lucky you @bridgett – so lucky you are to have non drinking friends to go away with for the weekend. have fun.

    • Have fun! It helps to remember in the beginning that weekends are just more days of the week. Not to be celebrated by poisoning ourselves and feeling like shit Monday morning.

@Andlan, welcome. It is early days for me too, and this page is already helping. I’m also reading everything I can get my hands on and working through “The 30-Day Sobriety Solution,” which gives me the structure I’ve been missing in past attempts. Best wishes to you!

    • Yes I have been reading a lot too. I found a great booklet on the health risks of persistent heavy drinking. No holds barred, pretty scary.

JudyB, I have a sweet drink of some kind (I like fruity soda sweetened with Stevia) instead of the wine, and eat dinner promptly to get through the witching hour… Good luck.

  • I’m on Day 3 (doing The 30-Day Sobriety Solution) and looking for some online support–glad to have found my way here.
