• You guys, so absorbed in my book last night (Barbarian Days, A Surfing Life by William Finnegan), just had water and went to bed early! About to finish, any reco’s, I’m into autobios, memoirs, not crime or mystery. Let me know what you like reading, it is super helpful in the eve! xo

    • Hi @Avalon! I loved Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, and on the sober front The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray. : )

It just likes lemon water (if you mean the detox drink). And yes, when it’s cooler, I make a big batch of tea that sounds similar to this. It’s just been unusually hot here (as everywhere, ugh), and I can’t imagine a large pot on the stove doing anything at the moment. But thank you for the suggestion!

  • Avalon posted a new activity comment 11 months, 2 weeks ago

All good suggestions, thanks! Too funny–in my inbox, I was reading all of your comments, and right in-between a couple of them was an ad for how to make a Sangria Mojito, LOL!

Actually, speaking of lemon, I’ll share with you a detox drink I found on some fb site. You wash a whole lemon well, cut it into 4, toss it skin and all, in the blender with 2 tbsp. olive oil and 4 cups filtered water (I add a big squeeze of ginger), blend the s**t out of it, then put through a sieve into a pitcher. I drink about 4 oz. of that every night before bed or, if I forget, first thing in the morning. You’ll see a difference in digestion and skin, and, presumably, your liver will thank you.

    • What does it taste like? I feel ill with ACV – instant nausea…
My never ending fav is in drinks of the week, camomile passion fruit mocktail tea with many teas (red, green, oatstraw, fruity, lemon and ginger) then grated turmeric and ginger, boiled for 10 mins. added – drink cold with ice and soda – addictive and ultra healthy is something of a mission to make. So worth it

  • Hi, all, greetings from California! Looking for ideas for substitute to the nightly glass(es) of wine. I’m doing Diet Snapple tea right now, but I’d be interested to hear what others are doing. It’s too hot here to make tea, although I do make coffee and keep it in a pitcher for iced during the week. But that’s for the morning. What are y’all having in the evening?

    • I just squeeze a lemon into water, nothing exciting but I love it, not too sweet, can vary the strength to suit, I generally squeeze 1 lemon into a small carafe (less than a litre of water) then don’t have to make it up each glass

    • I like kombucha, too. In the early days when I stopped drinking alcohol, I had a cup of decaf coffee in the evening when I got home. It helped me replace the ritual of opening wine with the ritual of brewing coffee and felt special. I also drink lots of sparkling water. I have it plain or with a slice of lemon, but companies are falling all over themselves to come up with new flavors, so lots to experiment with there. Another thing I like to do, especially in the summer, is to make up some “spa” water. The big containers of water at spas or hotels always looks so refreshing and tempting, and you can make them at home, too. Put cucumbers and mint in a jug of water in the fridge, maybe some lemons or limes, or use berries instead of cukes. Or go to a spa if you can with the money you’re saving, have some of their water along with a nice massage. You’re worth it!

    • Hot cocoa.

    • Strangely I didn’t really use any substitute drinks in my early days of sobriety. Except for apple cider vinegar and water in the summer. There are lots of yummy drinks tho! I think I ate a lot of chocolate instead lol. Oops all good tho that was a very handy distraction at the time and I can take it or leave it now 🙂 If I go out for dinner or events I usually just have water because I got my sugar fix from chocolare or deserts lol. Looking back to my triggers to drink, usually I was just damn thirsty!

    • i drink sparkling water and some sort of splash of lemonade, fruit juice or some other fancy drink i buy. i don’t plan on doing it forever… maybe, but i love looking for new drinks in the grocery store.

      • Me too – had to laugh when I baulked at playing $5 for a bottle of fancy cordial (which lasts a couple of weeks) but would happily fork out $20+ on wine for one night!!

    • All good suggestions, thanks! Too funny–in my inbox, I was reading all of your comments, and right in-between a couple of them was an ad for how to make a Sangria Mojito, LOL!

Yay to you for Day 4! I tried that on an audible version with him reading it, I adore him, read both Booky Wooks. But I couldn’t relate to a lot of it, because I’ve never been into drugs! HA! I’m keeping it light over here, FINALLY reading Pattie Boyd’s “Wonderful Tonight,” after seeing her interview with Taylor Swift in Vogue. I also have Barbarian Days by William Finnegan, he’s a New Yorker writer who’s also surfed all his life, won the Pulitizer for it. Feels so good to be relaxing with a book rather than wine. 🙂

    • lol ….. what no hard drugs?! Me either but then again maybe I am just lucky they werent stocked in the wine aisle at my local supermarket 😉 The books you are reading sound amazing, I’m in bed about to read more Russell.

That’s awesome, congrats, and Happy Birthday!

  • Hello, all, Day 3 and woke up feeling great about not being hungover, bloated, or puffy around the eye area! Woke early for the O-Dark-30 trip to get the kid to her bus stop, even. Actually read for hours last night, which I haven’t done in ages, with a large glass of water at my side. I. Am. Done.

    • Morena Avalon,

Yay for Day 3 and yay you……I’ve just woken to my Day 4……dang I love this site reading all your posts is like having continuous dejavu.

I too last night read in bed for several hours, a large cup of tea and a couple of fancy as chocolates by my side, first I hung out on this site picking up good tips and then read the first two chapters of Russell Brands book Freedom From Our Addictions (the first time I’ve read the 12 steps)……Lol for someone who doesn’t necessarily consider themselves a ‘Alcoholic’ it certainly sounded like me and I wasn’t even offended when Russell told me that I’m basically just a bit “F*%#Ked Up” I even managed a wry smile and a giggle………cos the best news is there is a way forward and its feeling like I may have finally found it.

Thanks to you all for sharing, the pandadol tip in a thread yesterday was gold on my Day 3.

Wishing you all Love, Laughter, Peace and Harmony today.

Thank you, I thought about you guys all the time during my dark days of working a lot, drinking when I came home, getting up and getting kid off to school, driving, working, repeat. As said previously, I’m done. I’m feeling liberated to take some time off for myself. I’m really sorry to lose my job, she was the best boss I ever had, but I also feel bad that she didn’t have the power to protect me. Looking forward to posting on the regular.

  • Hi, everyone, long time, no sober. Finally ready. I left a job two weeks ago, loved my boss, loved what I was doing, but a bully got in the way, I called it, and am now unemployed. Not for long, not worried about it, etc. But in the first few days, all I wanted to do was drink wine. Then I was listening to Marc Maron’s WTF podcast (don’t know if you get it in NZ, but it is fantastic), and he was interviewing Joe Walsh. Of all people, I never even paid that much attention to this guy, but he did it all and almost died, they talked about sobriety, and Walsh said he finally went into rehab. He went in for a week, stayed for 5, and in his words, “It’s a lot easier when you’re done.” That really got through. I’m done. Spent yesterday just organizing the house and picking up my kid, making contacts, my resume looks fantastic, and a recruiter is telling me, “Just let me know when you’re ready.” Even though it’s only Day 2, it feels really good because I. Am. Done. Thanks for being here, I’ll check in more regularly as I go through this process. xo

    • Great to have you back @avalon. Sounds like you are in your way. Post often and congrats on day 2!

I know you’re right, it’s just so disappointing sometimes. When she was little, we were always going places, doing things, seeing people, other kids. Her friend called to invite her to swim, she said no. It’s 100 degrees and she’d rather sit in her room. Anyway, onward and upward, thank you for the encouragement.

  • Avalon posted an update 2 years, 1 month ago

Starting over again, folks. Teenager came home after two weeks, we fell into old routines, she in her room, me at my computer. After an incredibly productive day on Saturday that started at 6am: got car washed and upholstery shampooed (trading in for new), walked our Lake (60 mins.), took photos of car for appraisal, cleaned kitchen floor, did laundry, vacuumed, made food for the week, everything done that I planned to do and more, then, feeling accomplished, started drinking wine. Went for a nap around 7, woke up at midnight wearing a sundress and bra, total cotton mouth and where did the time go feeling. Tonight, I had made a reservation for us to go to dinner, last minute, she says, “I’m tired, can’t we get take out?” I went by myself, drank a bunch of water with a very good dinner, but felt pretty shitty about the fact that my kid never wants to leave her room, even after not having seen me for two weeks. Attempt at sobriety happening again. Ugh.

    • Try not to be discouraged and just move forward. Every mistake is a chance to get new information about the problem, what works and what doesn’t. Be proud of how incredibly productive you had been during the day! And teenagers, bless them…. We can’t !et our feelings be hurt by them. If we did, we would just collapse into a puddle. Fortunately, they come back from their closed off world to rejoin us in a few years. Xxx

    • That was A LOT of work you did. Boy have I done just what you did many times: exhausted myself tryin to fit all my chores in the weekend, then rewarded self with wine only to fall asleep way too early. You aren’t starting all over though. You are just dusting off and continuing onward. I totally get your daughters behavior too. So very common. At that age peers are the most important, but it can be frustrating to watch them isolate and not help out more. I wish you a good week ahead.

And take in a wonderful movie, Tallulah, if you haven’t already. Watched it three times. Ellen Page, Allison Janney, Tammy Blanchard. So good.

  • Avalon posted an update 2 years, 1 month ago

Happy Friday to all. A renewed Day 5, but feels like more, GAH, the sleep I’m getting, bliss!

Teenager goes to camp on Monday and I’m looking forward to having the place to myself, all sorts of plans to organize, clean and center. She’s still not speaking to me and staying in her room for the most part, this for over a week, but last night, she emerged from her Teen Cave to break her silence because after a day at the beach, she felt weird in her chest, like she wasn’t breathing right. I asked if she wanted me to put a humidifier or something in her room, if she wanted some balm, Mom stuff (that if I’d been in my cups, I might not have been so present to consider, BTW). She looked me in the eyes for the first time in a long time and said no, she was fine, she was my baby in that moment, but instead of a hug, like I’d usually offer, I said okay and just went about my business. I think since she’s going to be away for a couple of weeks, it’s starting to dawn on her that she’s been a right beast to me for awhile now. I got a text yesterday, “Am I supposed to do my own laundry before AND after camp?” haha Yes, I replied. The world is changing. I have been doing everything for her, and it’s astonishing how easy it has been to pull back and just say, deal with it. Anyway, didn’t mean to make this a long-winded, have a great day, and thanks for being here!

    • That’s pretty cool momming, right there!

      • Thanks! I’m trying! Long convo via text, natch, feel like we’re getting somewhere, hoping we can have some semblance of love and order before she goes away.

    • Perfect. I told my 16 year old he will be doing his own laundry. When your not drinking you start to think about yourself finally.

      • Yeah, and did he look at you like you had two heads? She did it yesterday, I’m sure reluctantly. But a page has been turned, and it was sort-of liberating to address one hamper and not two. 🙂

    • Teenage girls! I raised one myself. My friends and I always said that aliens would come and invade their bodies from about the age of 13. Then somehow they would return to us as 18 as if the teenage years never happened.

Enjoy your time to yourself and try to do something FUN for you!

    • Good work

    • Go you!!! Did you read yesterdays discussions re teens? Big theme at present

    • Woooooo hoooooo a win! Well done for sticking to your guns. She’s getting her head around a whole range of life skills and she’ll appreciate just how much you’ve been doing for her. One day taking care of her own crap will just be second nature to her and she’ll be a fully functioning human being.
You can wait. It’ll be worth it 🙂

      • Thank you! I can wait, and I eagerly await. The resentment is palpable, like a bad candle, but we’ll get past it. And Monday I drop her off to have sun and fun with her pals at camp. She needs it, I need it, it’s all a WIN!

HA! I like your style! Thank you. Yes, the new sobriety emboldens me to let her have it. She’s gotten away with so much. I kept saying she’s a straight A student, so cut her some slack. But she does NOTHING around the house, I’m a single mom working full-time, and that is not on! Ends today. If I ever see her again. 😉

I think that’s a great idea. A full day off with tiger balm, heating pad and ice packs has helped immensely. Teenager is going to a sleepaway camp next week and then to my sister’s for a week, so I will have two weeks to just chill out, hallelujah!

  • Avalon posted a new activity comment 2 years, 1 month ago

Well, she’s not answering texts, is still in her room, hasn’t eaten or come out, I’m on the sofa nursing the back, guess she’ll have to face me eventually. Loved your book and am going to read some of the suggested books as well. xo

    • Oh god @Avalon that sounds absolutely awful. Teens eh? Being a bit of a consequence person the money would go as well as the toys. Just til she does her bit. Good luck xxx

  • Avalon posted an update 2 years, 1 month ago

So I blew up at the teenager last night, school’s out and it’s just been non-stop in her room doing nothing, with me working full-time whilst also doing laundry, dishes, cleaning, you name it. I went for a pedicure and oddly, when I got home, my back was totally strained, I could barely walk. Sink full of dishes and when I went to lie down, I found a bag of clean clothes that had been at her door ALL DAY and I’d just had enough, yelled at her to PUT AWAY HER CLOTHES AND DO HER DISHES NOW! She just looked at me with her mouth wide open, finally said, “I don’t know if you’re drunk or what,” I said, “I’m not drunk, I’m not drinking,” but that really threw me. Stayed home from work to rest the back and just read Mrs. D’s book from start-to-finish. I’m grateful for having read it, for finding this community, and for another day of not drinking. Have a great week, all.

    • sounds like the teenager needed that! welcome to your new sober mummy! x

      • Well, she’s not answering texts, is still in her room, hasn’t eaten or come out, I’m on the sofa nursing the back, guess she’ll have to face me eventually. Loved your book and am going to read some of the suggested books as well. xo

Book yourself a massage. Ignore the washing, it’s not your job this week.

      • I think that’s a great idea. A full day off with tiger balm, heating pad and ice packs has helped immensely. Teenager is going to a sleepaway camp next week and then to my sister’s for a week, so I will have two weeks to just chill out, hallelujah!

    • I woulda said the same thing to my teenager as well. xx

      • Thanks! Long time coming, but she’s staying out of my way big time today. Whatever. Looking forward to going to work tomorrow. 😉

      • Yep. Screamed at my Miss 12 going on 20 hellchild last week. We both survived it. It’s good to have a clear put every now and then. The conversation afterwards is always good and we sort shit out properly then. It happens.

        • We’ll see, she’s pretty willful, and has been incommunicado all day. Just came out twice for large bowls of cereal. Ugh.

    • I love nagging and yelling at my teen now. They go through such a me me me stage and when I was drinking I avoided any kinda conflict with her outa guilt about being a drunk mum too many times. No guilt here now that I’m sober. I’m armed and ready haha. Hope your gorgrous brat lightens up soon xx

Day 9! And the frustrations of dealing with a teenager continue apace. TURNS OUT they are difficult whether one is drinking or not, so it’s best to deal with them hangover-free! I have a physical tomorrow and am so happy that I will have gone into my 10th day of sobriety upon taking it–think how clear my liver panel will be! 😉

Have a super day, all! xo

    • Well done on Day 9, Avalon. Yep, the problems don’t go away, they’re just easier to deal with. Double digits just around the corner. That’s rather awesome, huh? Be proud.

    • OMG my son is really hitting his teenage strides at the moment. I can’t imagine how I would have dealt with it whilst drinking – badly I assume!

      • Well, at least I am totally present and in the moment when she’s treating me like crap! This shall pass, I hope… 🙂

    • Bloody teens 🙁 🙁 🙁 peace out as Janus would say!!! Xxx
