Golden Milk

close up warm golden milk

If you haven’t tried golden milk, it’s time to add it to your list of nourishing drinks. It's the drink you make if you're feeling exhausted, poorly, low or just in need of a hug in a mug. It contains many powerful spices, particularly turmeric and ginger, and is guaranteed to warm you up and make you feel cared for. Play around with the quantites to get the taste profile you like (e.g. more or less sweetener, vanilla etc). Enjoy warm, cooled over ice or even as the base for a banana smoothie.

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut milk (or milk of choice)
1 cup water
1 tsp turmeric
Pinch of ginger
1 heaped tsp ginger
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch nutmeg
Pinch cloves
Big spoonful of honey or maple syrup (to taste)

Method:

Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan.

Simmer gently for 10 minutes.

Pour into your favourite teacup of mug.

Enjoy!

For the turmeric to do its thing (anti inflammatory) there should be just a pinch of black pepper too. I know, might not seem like the best thing to add, but you don’t need much. The reason is that turmeric is best absorbed by the body with the combo of black pepper and some sort of good fat like butter, oil, heavy cream or in this case, coconut milk.

Thank you for this recipe! Going to add it to my list!

Nurse taught me to make this the Indian way with goat’s milk. The black pepper contributes the absorption of nutrients somehow, and the whole thing is supposed to be good for your liver and nerves. I put extra ginger in it when I’m suffering from nausea and it really helps. Helps with sleep, too!
